Chapter 1340:
Before she left for Yoswye, he’d welcomed her eagerly, but his attitude had clearly shifted since her last visit. Something significant must have changed during this period.
Gerald’s expression faltered, his discomfort showing. After a long pause, he sighed deeply. “Elena, please don’t blame me. I just don’t think you and Wesley are a good match.”
He lowered his head. He had truly once wanted Elena to join their family, hoping she’d become his granddaughter-in-law someday. Now, with his own health declining, all he wished for was a future for the Spencer family without new complications.
Steady and calm, Elena fixed her gaze on him. “Gerald, I’d appreciate it if you’d tell me your reasons. Why are Wesley and I suddenly incompatible?”
Initially, Gerald had wanted to avoid this meeting, but Elena’s composed approach softened his…
Reluctance. A weary breath escaped him. “You’re sharp, Elena. I’ve always admired that about you. So I’ll be straightforward.”
Unflinching, Elena waited, giving him time to share his thoughts.
“I watched Wesley become the man he is. For years, he’s been rational, dependable—the kind of leader the Spencer Group needs. But after he met you, it’s like he lost his objectivity. I’m worried he’ll repeat his father’s mistakes—letting love cloud his judgment and risking everything for it.”
Elena’s eyes narrowed slightly. “But Wesley and I have known each other for some time now. Why go against our relationship all of a sudden?”
Gerald didn’t sugarcoat his concerns. “You’re remarkable, Elena, but trouble always seems to find you. Remember what happened in Yoswye? Wesley nearly lost his life there. What if something like that happens again? Could he still make it out alive? I want his safety more than anything. I’m not going to be around forever, and the thought of Wesley being left on his own keeps me up at night. I want him to settle down and start a family soon. If that makes me selfish or even a coward, so be it. Hate me if you want.”
Old age brought both wisdom and fear, and Gerald found he could not gamble with his grandson’s future. Nothing mattered more now than seeing Wesley married and settled before his own days ran out.

Elena hadn’t expected this angle of concern. “Gerald, I would never blame you for looking out for Wesley. I would never hate you for it, either.”
Gerald’s expression softened.
Elena continued firmly, “I’m not going anywhere. No matter what happens, I won’t walk out on Wesley.”
For a moment, Gerald couldn’t think of a single reply.
Unblinking, Elena met his gaze. “You’re missing something. Wesley isn’t on his own, not as long as I’m here. As long as he stands by me, I’ll stand by him. I can’t promise nothing bad will ever happen again—life doesn’t work that way. But both of us know that having power means facing the risks head-on.”
Her steady voice left no room for doubt.
