Chapter 1356:

After so long in captivity, the man stank so badly that the air seemed to curdle. Wrinkling her nose, Cathy took a step back. “That’s disgusting. He smells awful.”

Although she couldn’t place him, the man recognized her right away. A spark of hope lit up his eyes. “Sweetheart, it’s really you! If you help me out of this, I’ll make it worth your while—anything you want, just say the word!”

Cathy was too stunned to respond. She had no idea who he was.

Excitement made the man’s words rush out. “Come on, baby, it’s me! Remember that night at the club? We had the time of our lives! You were on fire that night…”

“Just shut up already!” Cathy snapped.

All at once, the memory returned—this was the man from her one-night stand overseas.

Understanding dawned across every Garrett’s face. This foreigner was the father of Cathy’s child.

Desperation twisted the man’s features as he lunged for Cathy, only to be driven back by a solid kick to the shoulder.

Cathy recoiled, shouting, “Stay away from me! If it hadn’t been for you, I wouldn’t be in this mess! Now I’m stuck with a baby I can’t even get rid of, and everyone’s laughing at me!”

News of her pregnancy had hit Cathy hard; her first thought was to end it before anyone found out. Doctors, however, had warned her that terminating could threaten her life, maybe even make it impossible for her ever to have children again. She would never have considered keeping the baby if she’d had a choice.

Shock rippled across the man’s face. “Wait—a baby? You’re pregnant with my child? That’s incredible! Untie me! I’ll take responsibility, I swear. We can get married right now!”

What started as sheer terror shifted quickly. The man had assumed he was as good as dead. Now, all he needed to do was answer for a night neither of them remembered clearly. To save his own skin, he was ready to take responsibility for anything.

Valerie frowned in contempt. “Who do you think you are? You must be out of your mind if you think you’re good enough to marry my daughter.” No way would she let a nobody like this man anywhere near her daughter.

Calm and direct, the man replied, “I’m the father of her child.”

Words failed Valerie. She glared at Cathy with barely disguised fury and disappointment, unable to process how her daughter, her pride, ended up tangled with someone so unworthy.

The Garrett family had given Cathy every advantage. For her to wind up in this scandal, Valerie could hardly keep herself from exploding.

Kirby took control of the room with a single look. “Keep him in Klathe until the baby is born. We’ll run a paternity test then.”

Valerie bristled. “Kirby, you can’t seriously be thinking of marrying Cathy off to him. We can raise this child on our own. If it comes to it, I’ll take care of the baby. Cathy still has a chance to marry well in this city. I won’t allow this marriage to happen!”

Fear gripped Cathy. Worried that Kirby might force her hand, she protested, “I don’t want to marry him! Please don’t make me!”
