Chapter 1371:
Refusing to even look at her, Jaxon focused on Wesley and Elena, lowering his head in apology. “Mr. Spencer, Miss Harper, please accept my sincerest apologies. She’s new to all this and doesn’t know how things work. I’ll get her out of your way at once.”
Wesley gave him a glance. “Weren’t you supposed to be living overseas these days?”
Awkward laughter slipped from Jaxon. “That’s right. I made the mistake of offending Miss Harper once at a party, so my family exiled me. Since it’s the holidays, I was allowed back for a short visit.”
Everyone in their circle remembered how Jaxon had failed to recognize Elena at one of Malcolm’s parties. That blunder had cost him dearly and landed him a ticket abroad.
Now, barely back in town, Jaxon was already neck-deep in trouble again. He shot a reproachful look at the clueless woman, silently wishing she’d disappear before she caused more chaos.
Making a last-ditch effort, Jaxon turned toward Elena with pleading eyes. “Miss Harper, I apologize for ruining your shopping trip. Please let me cover anything you pick out today.”
It was no secret in Klathe that crossing Wesley was a terrible idea. More than that, everyone knew Wesley would do anything for Elena.
Realizing his only chance, Jaxon appealed directly to the one person who might save him from disaster.
The woman’s eyes burned with jealousy as she glared at Elena. She couldn’t stand being ignored any longer and snapped,
“Jaxon, who the heck is this bitch? Why are you throwing money at her?”
She truly couldn’t fathom it. Jaxon was her prize catch—a rich young man she had spent months chasing and had finally landed as her boyfriend. So why was he opening his wallet for some random woman?
Her face twisted into an ugly pout as jealousy consumed her. “Look at her! She already has a boyfriend, but she’s still letting you pay for everything! This slut is playing multiple guys at once. Doesn’t she have any shame?”

Jaxon’s face darkened with rage as his hand flew across her cheek with a loud crack.
“Shut your mouth! Say one more word, and I promise you’ll wish you were never born!”
He cursed himself inwardly. How the hell had he ended up stuck with such a brain-dead idiot? She was going to get him killed.
Jaxon was absolutely livid. He had come home to relax and have a good time, not to babysit this disaster. If she ruined this for him, he would lose his mind. If he’d known she was this stupid, he wouldn’t have touched her with a ten-foot pole, no matter how hot she was.
The force of his slap whipped her head to the side, leaving a bright red handprint across her swollen cheek. She looked up at him in complete shock, unable to believe what had just happened. Jaxon had always spoiled her, treating her like a princess. But now, he had slapped her not once, but twice—and all because of that slut.
