Chapter 1377:

Elena arched an eyebrow and replied, “I never said I don’t know how to play. That idea came from you, didn’t it?”

Lyla was at a loss for words. She was certain that Elena had deliberately reacted that way earlier just to watch her flounder.

With reddened eyes and a shaking voice, Lyla turned to gaze at Wesley. “Elena, are you trying to say this is my fault?” Wesley paid her no attention at all.

Seeing Lyla so upset, Carola interjected to comfort her. “Please don’t think like that. Miss Harper didn’t mean anything by it. There’s no need to get upset, Lyla.”

Lyla shook her head, pouting as if deeply wounded. “Elena must have something against me. Why else would she start playing faster? I guess she didn’t want to play with me in the first place.”

Suspicion clouded Carola’s face. “Miss Harper, did you do that on purpose?”

A chill flickered in Elena’s eyes. As a guest, she had tried to let Lyla save face, but Lyla kept pushing it.

Elena spoke with quiet confidence. “Mrs. Stanley, anyone who actually understands piano would know Lyla was the first to speed up. I just adjusted to her changes. If Lyla couldn’t keep pace, it might be better for her to practice instead of putting the blame on me.”

Without the knowledge of a musician, Carola struggled to keep up with the discussion. Turning toward Lucian, she asked, “Honey, is that true?”

Years ago, when Carola was unwell, she’d tried to sit in on Lyla’s piano lessons but had tired quickly. Lucian had eventually stepped in to make sure Carola could rest.

Over time, Lucian had picked up quite a bit of skill at the piano himself. He glanced at Elena. “Miss Harper is right. Lyla, when technique isn’t strong, extra practice is necessary. You need to apologize.”

Lyla found it easy to sway Carola, but she never dared push back against Lucian.

Lucian would do anything for Carola, but when it came to others—even Lyla, his adopted daughter—he kept his distance.

Facing Lucian’s sternness, Lyla had no choice. Even though she clearly did not want to, she mumbled an apology. “I’m sorry, Elena. I shouldn’t have doubted you.”

Elena had already done her homework about Lucian—he was a powerful shipping tycoon who ruled over the largest shipbuilding business in the world and managed…

He managed a sprawling chain of high-end hotels, supermarkets, and casinos. The stories about him made him sound like a legend, yet he always kept a low profile.

Still, Elena had never imagined that a man of his status would be so devoted to his wife. Unless necessary, she avoided offending him. So when Lyla apologized, she let the matter drop. After this, the mood at dinner turned tense.

Not long after, Wesley stood and expressed his desire to leave.

Knowing Lyla had overstepped, Carola worried that Wesley might become distant. She could not quite explain the strange pull she felt toward him. “Are you planning to attend Mr. Boyd’s birthday celebration?” she asked.
