Chapter 1384:

Wesley didn’t spare Lyla a single glance. His attention stayed locked on Elena. Under Lyla’s expectant gaze, he drawled slowly, “Sweetheart, someone is chasing me. You have to keep me close and help me fend them off.” The entire room went quiet. Had Wesley really just blurted that out?

Lyla was so taken aback that she lost track of her own plan, her gaze fixed on Wesley in disbelief. Winning Wesley over with her sugary act had been her goal all along. Now he had turned everything upside down by asking Elena for help instead. How was any of this logical?

Jaxon found the whole scene hilarious, nearly breaking into applause. Wesley completely derailed Lyla’s charade, not giving her a chance to recover. Heat rushed to Lyla’s cheeks. She stomped her foot, unable to hide her irritation.

“Wesley, stop talking nonsense! I didn’t—”

Jaxon clicked his tongue, shaking his head.

“What a performance!”

Lyla froze, words stuck in her throat. Why did this guy always single her out? She pouted, frustration written all over her face.

“Why do you keep picking on me? We’re basically strangers!”

Jaxon shot her a smirk.

“Picking on you? You’re full of accusations. I haven’t done a thing.” He tossed her own complaint right back at her.

Another wave of embarrassment hit Lyla. For a moment, she was speechless.

She looked over at Wesley, hoping he’d rescue her from the awkwardness.

Wesley, though, kept his grip on Elena’s hand and refused to step in for Lyla.

Lyla seethed inside, blaming Elena for turning everything against her. She sent Elena a look that barely hid her frustration.

When Lyla faced Jaxon again, her patience had vanished.

“What? Are you targeting me for money?”

Jaxon raised his eyebrows, genuinely confused. Where did this woman get her ideas? Did he look like someone desperate for money? He would never stoop so low, not even if his circumstances were dire, and certainly not at his grandfather’s birthday celebration. Where did this lunatic even come from?

A harsh laugh escaped Jaxon.

“What exactly are you trying to say?”

Trying to keep her sweet act alive, Lyla flashed a bundle of bills, waving them as if they’d solve her problems.

“Look, I’ve got cash. Take it. Just leave me alone already.”

Never in his life had Jaxon seen a woman try to pay him off. A muscle ticked in his jaw.

“What, you think I’m that desperate? I don’t want your charity. Save it. For a moment, I almost believed your routine. When exactly did I become your bully? Maybe you should see a shrink for all that paranoia. If you hadn’t jumped in, nobody would’ve even noticed you.”

Lyla had stormed into the scene, all righteous energy and harsh words aimed at Elena, and now she was playing the victim.
