Chapter 1390:

She read faster now, trying to piece it all together through the blur of tears. It turned out she had been the only heir to the powerful Myles family. After her so-called “death,” her devastated parents had both passed away, unable to bear the loss.

Her husband, Lawrence, hadn’t mourned her for long. He rushed to marry his mistress, abandoning their newborn son, Wesley, like an unwanted burden. If it hadn’t been for Gerald, who stepped in and took Wesley back to Hillside Manor and raised him, Wesley might not have even survived.

Grief crashed over Carola like a wave. Sobbing silently, she leaned into Lucian’s arms, her whole body shaking from the weight of everything she had just learned.

“Lucian, Wesley is my child. I lost him for twenty-six years. I wasn’t there for him. I failed him as a mother.”

Her mind flashed back to the first time she had met Wesley. He had been on the run, targeted by assassins.

That overwhelming pull she had felt back then suddenly made sense. That ache in her chest when she looked at him—it was a mother’s instinct. And she hadn’t even known.

“Lucian,” she whispered through her tears, “I have to go to the Spencer family estate. I need to see Wesley.”

Lucian didn’t hesitate.

“Then let’s go. I’ll be right beside you.”

Together, Lucian and Carola made their way to the Spencer family estate. When Gerald saw Carola, he froze. His eyes widened as if he were seeing a ghost.

“The resemblance is uncanny,” he murmured.

Carola felt a bit nervous, so Lucian stepped in to speak.

“Mr. Spencer, my wife lost her memory twenty-six years ago. We’ve come to ask you about what really happened back then.”

“Twenty-six years?” Gerald’s chest tightened.

Carola nodded.

“That’s right. I only remembered my name, Carola. That’s all I had.”

The tension in Gerald’s face slowly softened. His eyes glossed with emotion.

“Carola, it’s really you.”

Her voice quivered as she continued, “Twenty-six years ago, Lucian found me injured at the dock. I need to know, what happened back then? Why did I lose my memory?”

Gerald lowered his head and let out a long sigh. It was his mistake back then. Forcing Carola into a business marriage with Lawrence had triggered everything that went wrong.

Gerald explained, “You gave birth to Wesley, but there were complications. You lost a lot of blood, and the doctors said they couldn’t save you. We thought you died, so we held a funeral, cremated you, and gave your ashes to the Myles family. As for what really happened after that, I honestly have no idea.”

At that time, Carola had gone into labor a month early. Gerald had been out of town for work and had been informed that the doctors had given up hope. By the time he got back to Klathe, news that she had already been cremated reached him.

Gerald never imagined Carola was still alive. If her parents had been alive too, they would’ve been thrilled. And Wesley’s childhood might not have been so painful.
