Chapter 1394:

Lawrence took Zoie’s hand and pulled her protectively close.

“Zoie is the one I’ve always loved. She’s the one I want to spend my life with.”

Zoie froze. She lowered her head, feeling every stare like a knife to the skin. Was Lawrence trying to drag her down with him? The Spencers had hardly paid her any attention before, but now, suddenly, she was being thrown into the spotlight as the mistress. And if the truth ever came out about what she had done to Carola, she couldn’t even imagine the fallout. Zoie shrank behind Lawrence.

“Lawrence, I’m scared.”

Feeling protective, Lawrence wrapped his arms around her.

Carola watched their little act of love, and deep down, she couldn’t understand why she had ever ended up marrying a man who never even cared about her. She knew Lawrence was once her husband, but after losing twenty-six years of her memories, he felt like a stranger. Everything in the investigation report read like it belonged to someone else; none of it felt real to her.

Feeling Lucian’s warm, steady hand in hers, Carola gave it a gentle squeeze in return. Her tone turned cold.

“I only came here to learn the truth about what really happened and to see my son. I’m not here to argue or get involved in anyone else’s business.”

Gerald looked over the chaos and let out a tired, heavy sigh.

Carola was holding Lucian’s hand, and Lawrence was holding Zoie’s. Even Gerald didn’t know what to make of it all anymore.

Gerald said, “Carola, the Spencer family owes you. Whatever you decide to do, we’ll support you.”

Gerald turned to the butler and ordered, “Go find the doctor who delivered Carola’s child.”

At his words, Zoie’s eyes widened in fear. A wave of panic rushed through her, making her heart race. Gerald wanted to dig into the past now? No! She couldn’t let that happen!

Zoie felt like the walls were closing in, as if she were stuck in a room filled with smoke, panicked and powerless. Her fingers trembled as she took out her phone, hoping to reach Joseph in time.

But just before she could press send, Wesley’s voice cut through the silence.

“Don’t bother. That doctor stepped down over two decades ago.”

Gerald had lived long enough to know when something didn’t feel right.

“Did you try to find the doctor anyway?” he asked.

Wesley looked him in the eye and said calmly, “The doctor disappeared without a trace.”

Gerald slowly nodded.

“If that’s the situation, then we’ll drop the matter for now.”

Zoie’s chest finally relaxed. She figured Joseph must’ve cleaned everything up. Even Wesley hadn’t been able to find anything. As long as no one from back then could be found, nothing could link the truth back to her.

Relief slowly spread through Zoie, and a faint smile tugged at the corners of her lips. However, what she didn’t know was that Wesley had already caught that smile.

Confident that no one could prove anything, Zoie turned to Lawrence.
