Chapter 1416:

But Lydia had curled against the sofa cushions, fast asleep.

Jeffry knelt beside her and noticed the dark shadows beneath her closed eyes, a sharp pang of sorrow piercing his chest. She hadn’t slept well the night before, either.

He raised his hand with infinite gentleness, letting his fingertip barely graze the delicate skin at the corner of her eye.

“Lydia, please don’t abandon me,” he whispered inwardly.

Jeffry froze, barely breathing, his gaze fixed on Lydia.

“Lydia… I know I’ve messed up plenty in the past, but I’ve learned from every mistake. From this day on, I promise I’ll never let go of you. Let me be the one to stand beside you for the rest of your life. Please… I love you.”

The words came out uneven, far from the polished confession he had hoped for.

His chest felt tight, every muscle wound up like a spring. He had never been this nervous before, his heart thundering so loud that he swore Lydia could hear it.

When the last word left his lips, the room fell into a suffocating silence.

Lydia didn’t answer. She didn’t move. She didn’t even look like she was thinking about it.

Something in his gut told him the answer wasn’t going to be the one he wanted. Then it came, cool and sharp as glass.

“I’m not going to marry you.”

Lydia’s words landed like a physical blow. Jeffry’s blood ran cold, and the strength drained from his legs.

“Lydia, please. Just one more chance. I know I hurt you before, and you can punish me however you want. But the baby, our baby, doesn’t deserve to pay the price. Let me take care of both of you…”

But faced with that unreadable, indifferent look on her face, his voice kept shrinking until it was barely more than a whisper.

He went stiff, his heart breaking and his hands shaking from the hurt.

Meanwhile, Lydia’s expression hardened. She was right. He was doing it for the baby. That was why he was here, lowering himself to propose.

A bitter laugh caught in her throat but never made it out. What was she to him, really? Her jaw tightened.

“Jeffry, I will not marry you. Never.”

The finality in her tone was like a door slamming shut. Jeffry’s body seemed to falter, as though an icy hollow had opened inside him, chilling him to the bone. She said she would never marry him.

“Lydia…” he murmured, sounding lost.

But Lydia had no interest in hearing more.

“You should go. I’ll have Elena come pick me up.”

Elena came as soon as she heard.

Jeffry waited at the doorway, pale enough to rival a sheet of paper.

Elena frowned deeply.

“Jeffry, what’s going on?”

Jeffry shook his head.
