Chapter 1427:

“But she’s cautious. How are we supposed to sneak something into her glass without her noticing?”

Joseph wrapped an arm around Zoie’s shoulders.

“Zoie, this has to be done by Karen.”

“Karen?” Zoie repeated in disbelief.

“That’s right,” Joseph said.

“My father trusts her. She gets along with both Wesley and Elena. If it comes from her, Elena won’t question it.”

The logic held, yet Zoie still hesitated.

“Karen doesn’t know how to pretend. She says what she thinks and means every word. What happens if she lets something slip?”

Zoie’s concerns were solid. Everyone knew how ruthless Wesley could be. If Karen slipped, she’d pay dearly.

Joseph stroked Zoie’s hair to calm her.

“It’s exactly because she can’t fake it that it’ll look convincing.”

Zoie parted her lips to protest, but Joseph cut her off with a kiss.

“Karen is our child. Do you think I’d ever put her at risk? Once this plan succeeds, the Spencer Group will be ours. You can divorce Lawrence, and we can finally be together in the open.”

For over two decades, Zoie had carried the quiet ache of wanting to be seen beside Joseph without hiding. Now, for the first time, she saw a glimmer of possibility. She clenched her jaw, gave a firm nod, and said, “Alright.”

Pleased with her resolve, Joseph kissed her once more.

“Zoie, you’re incredible.” The two lingered in each other’s arms inside the car and made out for a long while.

Eventually, Zoie adjusted her clothes and stepped outside, her face still glowing with satisfaction.

When Zoie returned to Plum Mansion, she went straight to Karen.

“Karen, I’ve thought it over. You were right. Elena truly matters to Wesley, and sooner or later, she’ll become part of the Spencer family. I shouldn’t keep judging her unfairly.”

Karen’s eyes sparkled.

“Mom, are you serious?”

Karen had feared Zoie would dig in her heels, keep shutting Wesley and Elena out, and ruin whatever good was still left between them. It caught her off guard, in the best way, to hear that gentle tone slip into her mother’s voice when speaking of Elena.

“Mom, that’s wonderful!” Karen exclaimed.

“Elena is really nice, nothing like you thought. She’s perfect for Wesley, and he’s head over heels for her. We should be glad they found each other.”

Zoie looked at her daughter’s bright smile, swallowed her displeasure, and forced a gentle smile of her own.

“You were right. I took her the wrong way. I assumed all she cared about was the Spencer fortune. Your father and I said things we shouldn’t have back at the Spencer estate, and I belatedly realized we crossed a line. Would you be willing to help set up a meeting so I can give her a proper apology in person?”
