Chapter 1444:
After six years serving the Spencer family, the maid’s face was familiar to Lawrence. He eyed her sharply.
“What really happened back then?”
Alarm flickered across Zoie’s features. The last thing she wanted was for the maid to reveal her instructions from years back.
“Lawrence, it’s nothing, really. Just some scammer trying to squeeze money out of me,” she hastily said.
“I’m not some scammer!” the maid wailed, grabbing hold of Zoie in panic.
“Ms.
“Perez, how could you toss me aside after making me do all that dirty work? You paid me five hundred thousand to mess with Mrs. Spencer’s food so she’d struggle through labor. You even instructed me to pour oil across the stairs, making her slip and go into labor prematurely! How can you stand there and deny all your involvement?”
“That’s a lie!” Zoie shouted, her voice sharp.
“You’re trying to blackmail me because I refused to give you a cent! None of what you’re saying is true.”
After a day locked in that basement, the maid no longer cared about money. Survival mattered more than anything else. She yanked a folded check from her pocket and waved it in the air.
“I’ve got proof! Here’s the check you wrote me then, with your signature. I worked as a maid for the Spencer family for six years, and I would never have left if it weren’t for that payoff.” Turning to Lawrence, she added, “Mr. Spencer, she instructed me to do those things. I never blackmailed her—she came to me.”
Handing the check to Lawrence, the maid stepped back. Zoie lunged forward to grab it, but Arion blocked her path.
Lawrence stared at the check, his face turning as dark as thunderclouds, his hand trembling with fury.
“Zoie, I never realized you were capable of such malice! The level of cruelty you’ve hidden all these years is staggering.”

Two decades earlier, Zoie had dared to plot a murder—and the target was his wife.
His voice was cold as ice.
“What else have you done behind my back? I want the truth. Tell me everything right now!”
Zoie wept uncontrollably without pause.
“I didn’t do anything, Lawrence. I swear.”
Lawrence struck Zoie hard across the cheek.
“You lying wretch! I can’t believe I’ve been betrayed and deceived by you for more than twenty years.”
The notion of being made a fool drove Lawrence into such fury that he wanted to end the lives of both Zoie and Joseph.
When Joseph saw Zoie struck, he spat words through clenched teeth.
“Lawrence, you worthless piece of shit! What sort of man lays hands on a woman?”
Lawrence scowled. He had never mistreated Joseph, yet Joseph had been secretly sleeping with his wife for over two decades.
