Chapter 1460:
Her body, still fragile from the fever, betrayed her. The moment her feet touched the floor, her legs buckled, and she stumbled straight onto Malcolm’s lap.
Mortification surged as Karen scrambled to get upright.
“S-sorry, Mr. Johnson,” she stammered, cheeks burning.
Malcolm glanced down, a flicker of amusement in his eyes.
“So it’s ‘Mr. Johnson’ now? You’re not calling me Malcolm anymore?”
Karen’s cheeks, already flushed, deepened into an even brighter shade of red. She thought back to how she had broken down in tears before him, replaying it with self-reproach. She wanted to disappear right then and there. What had possessed her to open up like that to Malcolm?
Her embarrassment only deepened when Malcolm, still unfazed, remarked, “You’re welcome to use my legs as a pillow, but at least let me finish my meeting first.”
Karen blinked, bewildered.
“Wait—meeting?”
Her eyes darted to the monitor, and she froze. The screen was filled with curious faces, all watching their interaction. Realization dawned: he was in the middle of a video conference.
Panic jolted Karen into action. She tried to stand, only to sway unsteadily. Malcolm’s arm shot out, steadying her.
“Let’s postpone this meeting,” he said smoothly into the speaker, closing the laptop with a quiet click.
Before Karen could protest, Malcolm gently scooped her up and settled her back onto the bed.
“Don’t push yourself. You’re still recovering. Just lie down and rest,” he told her, his voice leaving no room for argument.
Karen arched one eyebrow. No wonder she’d felt feverish and weak all night, unable to muster the strength to even stand on her own two feet.
“Do you want something to eat?” Malcolm asked.

Karen started to shake her head, ready to insist she was fine, but her stomach betrayed her with a loud growl. Embarrassment washed over her, and she dropped her head, avoiding his eyes.
Amusement flickered in Malcolm’s eyes as his lips twitched into a small grin. Without missing a beat, he told the housekeeper to send up a meal.
For a while, Karen sat in silence, fingers curled around her spoon. Curiosity finally won out, and she glanced up, asking in a small voice, “Why are you so kind to me?”
Malcolm arched an eyebrow, smirking.
“You didn’t sound half this sweet before.”
Karen’s nerves got the best of her, but she managed to soften her tone.
“Malcolm.”
His smile grew broader, a sharp contrast to the way he normally carried himself. Most of the time, his smile served as a cover, concealing the ambitions he kept tucked away. But now, his grin was unguarded, carrying no trace of hidden intent.
“Regardless, you’re Wesley’s half-sister. With you showing such a good attitude, it’s only natural that I treat you kindly.”
