Chapter 1495:
Gerald poured her a cup himself, and Elena smiled as she breathed in the aroma. The rich scent promised quality. She took a careful sip.
“This is excellent, Gerald.”
Gerald’s pleasure was obvious.
“Glad you like it. After dinner, take the rest home. I got it with you in mind.”
Wesley lounged in an armchair, one eyebrow raised.
“So, she gets the fancy coffee? I’ve been your grandson for years, and you didn’t even give me a glass of water. One might think she was your granddaughter.”
Gerald gave him a theatrical roll of his eyes.
“If Elena were really my granddaughter, I’d consider myself lucky.”
Wesley grinned, a spark of mischief in his eyes.
“That wouldn’t work for me, though.” He couldn’t marry Elena if she became his sister.
Gerald found an excuse to send Elena to the study for something, leaving Wesley behind.
Wesley didn’t bother with small talk.
“You called me back for a reason. What’s going on?”
Gerald and Wesley shared an understanding. Wesley knew from the call that Gerald had something to discuss.
Gerald got straight to the point.
“Set aside an evening and have dinner at Carola’s manor. She’s still your mother, Wesley.”
A chill crept into Wesley’s eyes.
“So she came here? Talked to you herself?”
Gerald didn’t bother with denial.
“The truth is, the Spencer family are the ones who failed her. If you’re looking for someone to blame, put it on me. I made mistakes, and my son made worse ones. But Carola is still your mother, and you owe her this much. One meal—that’s all I ask.”

Wesley leaned back, arms folded, his face unreadable.
“Fine. One dinner. That’s all she gets.”
Elena made her way down the stairs, and even though Wesley and Gerald had wrapped up their conversation, she immediately sensed a difference in the air.
Once dinner ended, Wesley skipped taking the car and instead reached for Elena’s hand, choosing to walk home side by side. Their shadows stretched out beneath the moon, and Wesley’s gentle grip felt like a shield against the crisp night breeze.
Elena couldn’t hold back her curiosity any longer.
“What did Gerald talk to you about?”
Wesley had no intention of hiding anything from her.
“He asked me to have dinner at Carola’s manor.”
Elena inquired, “Do you want to go?”
Wesley answered, “I told him I’d go, but this will be the only time.”
