Chapter 1547:

“Let’s do it.”

On the steps outside City Hall, Ellis held their marriage certificate with quiet pride.

“I’ll hold onto this. Don’t want anything happening to it.”

Charlette just nodded, letting him take charge. Even though she had thrown out the idea of marriage, now that it was real, everything felt like a dream she hadn’t quite woken from. The whole day had moved so fast that it was hard to believe she and Ellis were really husband and wife.

Without warning, Charlette blurted out, “Do you regret it?”

Their worlds couldn’t have been more different, and they hadn’t spent much time together. The whole thing was spontaneous—maybe even reckless. Would he end up wishing he’d never said yes?

Ellis didn’t give her an answer. Instead, he reached into his pocket, pulled out a ring, and dropped to one knee in front of her.

The sight stole her breath. It was the same ring she’d once turned down.

All around them, strangers started to notice. Voices grew louder as the crowd caught on to the moment. There was something about beautiful people in love that always made others stop and watch, and Ellis and Charlette looked like they belonged on the cover of a magazine. Especially now, with Ellis kneeling in the sunshine, holding out a ring.

Somebody near the door sighed dreamily, “That’s so sweet!”

Another person called out, “Go on, say yes!”

The chant grew louder, and even the couples waiting for their own certificates got swept up in the excitement.

One woman nudged her boyfriend, murmuring, “He got down on one knee with a diamond ring. You brought me here with nothing but a sandwich.”

Her boyfriend responded, “Just give me time. I’ll get you a diamond, too—promise.”

But Ellis only had eyes for Charlette. He shut out the crowd, his gaze steady and full of warmth.

“I should’ve proposed sooner. Charlette, are you willing to spend the rest of your life with me?”

He might have missed the perfect timing, but he wasn’t about to let her skip the moment she deserved. That ring had been waiting for her for ages. He used to think he’d never get to see it on her finger. Somehow, fate had given them a second chance. Big speeches weren’t his thing—he believed in letting his actions speak for him.
