Chapter 16-1

The week and a half both passed by quickly and seemed to stretch for an eternity. Laura turned out to be anaturalat waiting. tables and she soaked in what, I had to teach her in no time. It eased my guilty conscience a little, as IknewI wouldn’t be ditching Mrs Jones and CeCe with a heavier workload. My last shift in the diner was an evening shift and as soon as the last paying customer had eaten their dinner, Mis Jones announced the diner was closed. my surprise, most of the town then flooded in as CeCe announced it was my goodbye party. It was a wonderful evening and even got a little teary–eyed a couple of times.CeCeand Jessie insisted they would come over to help me pack my car the following morning, even though I told them I would get help. In the end, I ran out of excusesandagreed they could come over. I don’t think couldhavekept them away even if I had said no. It was their way of trying to assess if they felt 1 was safe with Finlayornot. It was sweet. 1 had a hard time sleeping, my stomach was filled with nervous butterflies and my wolf was giddy with excitement.

My alarmwentoff at seven amand1 got up. I parked the bedding box I had saved for it and then headed down to the bakery. Mrs Andresen had promised to make me breakfast so I wouldn’t have to dirty any of my kitchen things my last morning. I carried in the two sacks of flour 1 always helped herwithandshe offered me veral froshly made muffins and some delicious coffee. As I was enjoying it and chit chatting with Mrs Andersen, I heard a car arrive, but it didn’t sound like Finlay’s truck. I headed outbackto investigate. To my surprise, it wasn’t just Finlaythathad arrived. He was leaning against an unknown truck with Sam and Medow. Medowsquealedwhen she saw me and ran to givemea tighthug. I bughedandhugged herback.

“I have missed you,” Medow said.

“I have missed you too. But I didn’t expect you to comehere,” I replied.

“I know, butwhen Finlaysaidhewould get you, we thought…” Medow began but got interrupted by Sam clearing his throat. Okay, okay, I thought,it would beanice thing if we came as well,” she finished.

“I’m not objecting. But four people to move me seems a little much. At that moment, CeCe andJessiecamewalking. I introduced everyone to each other and watched as Finlay and Jessiegaveeach other a measured look.I rolled my eyes and both CeCeandMedow giggled.

“Okay, let’s get me packed,” I told everyonebeforeit all turned into dick measuring contest. Withsixpeople and my very limited amount of boxes, it took less than half an hour to stow everything away in the Volvo and the truck.

“I’ll be driving.” Finlay told me and held out his hand for the key tomycar. I hesitated.

“I usually don’t let anyone else drive her,” I told him.

“Her?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

*Yeah, Aime has an unhealthy attachment to thatcar,” CeCe giggled

“Hey, me and Beulahavebeen through a lot,” I objected.

“Beula?” Medow asked.

“It suits her,” I said and pattedthesand–coloured roof. Everyone laughed.

“Are you going to tell me Ican’tdrive your car?” Finlayasked. The tone he used made it clear to mehewasasking as my Alpha. Technically,he wasn’t my Alpha yet. But it wouldn’t beagood way to start life in hispackby pointing outtechnicalitieslikethat.

“Of co

course not,” I said, tossing the keys to him.

“Thavepacked doughnuts for everyone, andcoffee,” Mrs Andersen said.Shewaswalkingto us holding two large bags and balancing four large to–gocups. Sam and Finlay hurried to help her. “Thank you, that’ssweetof you,” shesaid.

“I have packed some burgers for you to eat on the way.

No

fries, as they will just get soggy. But p

Chapter16-2

Don’t forget about us. You keep in touch,” Jessie said, giving me ag

“I will. And get your shit togetherandask her out before 1 have to sd someone to mess you up,” I told him. He grinned at me. Then it was CeCe’s turn. We bugged for a long while and promised to keep in touch and she promised to look out, for Jessie. I handed my apartment key back to Mrs Andersen and got into the passenger seat of the Valvo. Finlay was already sitting in the

driver’sseat.

“Are you okay?” heasked.

“I will be,” I told him.

“Ready to go home?”

“More than ready,” I agreed. It was the truth. Even though it was bittersweet to say goodbye to my old life, I was excited to start my new one.Iwaved to my friends as we drove off. The car smelled of red food and coffee. There were the worstscentsto be surrounded by. We drove in silence for a while. I think Finlay let me take in the moment and I appreciated it.

“Want a doughnut?” 1 finally asked.

“I never turn down deep fried baked goods,” he said. I smiled and fished one out of the bag and handed it to him. “Medow and auntMatildahave been busy planning your bloodening ceremony. Theytalkyou through it this afternoon. If you feel it’s too much or you don’tlikesomething, justtell them. Theywon’tbeoffended, he told me. I smiled as I munched on myowndoughnut.

“I’m sure I will like it. When is it planned for?”

“Tomorrow.” He watched me from the corner of his eyeasif he was afraid Iwasgoing to object.

“Sounds good. I’m looking forward to it.” He relaxed and smiled.

“So is the pack, you should hear how hyped up Cadence is.” Finlay told me with a laugh. It felt nice to know the pack was looking forward to taking me in.

“No objections from anyone or suspicions?” I asked.

“No. Youmadeasuperbimpression on everyone,” he said. He took a swipe out of his coffeeandsighed happily. I had missed him, even if we had talked over the phone every day. But I had missed his calming aura and clean, pine scent. I knew I needed to be careful. I couldn’t let myself or my wolf didn’t gettooattached. Finlay would find his mate, and when that happened, I needed to be able to accept her as my Luna. I would just make sure we kept things on a friendly level. Around the halfway mark, Finlay announced he had mind linked with Sam and it wastimetoeat. We jarked at some picnic tables by the side of the road andtookout the burgers and stuffed potatoes.

“I understand why you spent fourdayseating at that diner if this is the food theyareserving,” Sam told Finlay. We all laughed.Ifelt my wolf settling down. She recognised her new pack members, and she enjoyed the opportunity to reestablish the social connection we both had built during our three days at thepack. I noticed Finlay looking verypleasedabout something.

“I can drive,”I offered as we got back in the cars.

“Nothappening,” Finlay told me.

“Whatare you so pleased about?” I asked afterwehad been driving for a while.

“I like it whenaplan comes together. I’m getting a new pack member, a strong one. You will help us build a stronger pack and I Enjoy your company. I think I have every right to feel pleased, he told me. I laughed at his honesty.

“If youputit like that, I would say you are right,” I agreed and relax back.

“You look pleased as well,” he remarked,

“Ihavegota wolf. I’m about to have a pack and a new exciting job, and I think I’m becoming friends with my Alpha. I say I have just as much to be pleased about,” I toldhim. He chuckled.

“True. It’s a good day,” he agreed. We arrived at the pack house a couple of hours later. Finlay andIhadspent the time talkingandjoking. SowhenI got out of thecar, my legs felt a little stiff, but I was relaxed. I took a moment to scent my surroundingsandwas so occupied withtakingin the moment that I missed the projectile at came flying at me.
