Chapter 1015:

He was middle-aged—the eldest of the Evans siblings and clearly older than Charles, who was the youngest. Their eyes met across the room, and he offered her a subtle smile accompanied by a respectful nod.

After a moment’s consideration, Millie returned the gesture with a slight nod of her own.

She was about to make her way toward the dining area when Reuben’s secretary approached her.

“Mr. Evans has asked me to extend an invitation,” the secretary said, her professional smile perfectly composed. “Miss Bennett, would you be amenable to a private discussion?”

Millie’s eyes flicked back to Reuben, weighing her options carefully before responding, “I suppose that would be acceptable.”

They relocated to a secluded corridor. Millie brought Taylor along for support, while Reuben was accompanied by his secretary.

“Mr. Evans,” Millie began without preamble, “what exactly did you wish to discuss?”

“I’m curious whether any of today’s presentations managed to capture your interest,” Reuben replied, his tone conversational yet calculating.

Millie’s lips curved into an enigmatic smile, but she offered no verbal response to his probing question.

Reuben didn’t seem fazed by her silence, showing no trace of discomfort at her deliberate evasiveness.

“Charles has been making quite a spectacle of himself lately,” he remarked, smoothly shifting the conversation.

A soft laugh escaped Millie’s lips. “You’re his brother, and you surely know Charles has never been one to control his temper.”

Indeed, Charles’ volatile disposition was legendary throughout Crobert—a fact known to anyone who had even minimal dealings with the Evans family.

“You know what I really mean,” Reuben continued with quiet intensity. “There was a time when I dismissed him as completely insignificant, hardly worth my attention. But now, with both you and Myron lending him your considerable support, he’s begun wielding actual influence within our circles.”

Millie remained silent, allowing him the space to reveal his true intentions.

Reuben pressed forward. “Millie, there was a period when I suspected romantic entanglements between you and my younger brother, which is precisely why I maintained my distance. However, now that you’ve publicly announced your…”

“Engagement to Myron, I believe certain truths should be brought into the light.”

“Please, speak freely,” Millie said with a gracious nod.

“Even with Charles’ newfound political weight, I remain the most viable candidate to inherit control of the Evans family empire.” Reuben’s eyes narrowed to calculating slits, a predatory gleam flickering in their depths. “So, if I were in your position, I would carefully consider which alliance would prove most advantageous in the long run.”

Millie studied the man before her.

Her extensive interactions with Charles had already given her an earful of bitter complaints about his older brother’s treatment and attitude.

During her tenure at Watson Group, she had conducted business with Reuben on several occasions, though they had never developed anything close to a friendly working relationship.
