Chapter 1028:

He had never met anyone so ruthless—someone who could be so calculating toward others, yet equally merciless toward herself.

Then his expression darkened slightly. “If she hadn’t been pregnant at that particular time and lost her child that day, things might have turned out very differently. I’ve already told you this—there’s no possible future between her and me. She never led me on or gave me false hope. There’s a life standing between us, and that changes everything. Do you finally understand what I’m trying to tell you?”

Babette slapped her hands over her ears, refusing to listen anymore. “Stop! I won’t hear another word! What happened between you two was nothing but random chance. I’m the one who really matters to you!”

Her entire body was consumed by rage. Hot blood pounded through her veins while her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. She couldn’t stop shaking as wave after wave of overwhelming emotion crashed through her.

“When you came to my rescue that day, the concern in your eyes was real—I saw it!” Babette lunged forward and grabbed Egbert’s hand desperately. “I discovered later that you abandoned something incredibly important to come find me. You even got hurt in the process! You traveled such a long distance just for me!”

Egbert had no idea how to respond to this. All he could do was stare at her in uncomfortable silence.

The truth was that when he’d received that urgent message, all it said was that someone from Watson Group needed immediate help in Flesta—a young woman who was in serious danger.

He’d assumed the woman was Millie. He’d never imagined it would turn out to be Babette instead.
