Chapter 1058:

“That’s absolutely right, Millie,” she chimed in with false sympathy. “Even if you somehow managed to scrape together thirty million dollars for verification purposes, the most you could actually invest would be a few million at best. Trying to play the investment game with no real capital behind you? Isn’t that just embarrassing for everyone involved?”

If Babette could successfully provoke Millie into swallowing her pride and borrowing money from Myron, that would be the ideal outcome.

If not, she’d simply wait for another opportunity to strike later.

“What’s wrong, Millie? Cat got your tongue?” Babette’s laughter carried a cruel edge. “Mr. Evans has been trying to get an answer from you since the beginning of this discussion. Why do you keep dodging his simple question? Are you afraid to admit the truth? Didn’t you make all those grand declarations about your ambitions at your company’s opening celebration? Is this really all you’ve got? JM Investments, the Bennett family legacy, and you personally—none of it amounts to anything remarkable at all!”

Babette’s voice rang throughout the conference room.

The other attendees maintained their silence, knowing this wasn’t about them and content to observe the three-way battle playing out before them.

By this point, everyone had figured out what was really happening. Reuben and Babette had formed an unspoken alliance to publicly humiliate and pressure Millie.

Reuben continued his assault without mercy. “Of course, Millie, I am considerably older than you and more experienced in business. If you’re willing to acknowledge my superiority and show me the proper respect, I might be persuaded to let this slide.”

Behind Millie, Taylor was practically vibrating with fury at the blatant disrespect being shown to her boss.

Unable to contain herself any longer, Taylor spoke up with a tone of acid sweetness. “Mr. Evans, you truly possess such a generous and forgiving heart!”

The sarcasm in her voice was thick enough to cut with a knife. But Reuben didn’t even acknowledge Taylor’s existence. His entire focus remained fixed on Millie, like a predator watching its prey.

“Well? Why are you still silent?” he demanded, continuing to apply pressure without relenting for even a moment.

Millie lowered her gaze for a moment, and when she looked back up, there was a hint of amusement dancing in her eyes.

“I have to say, Miss Watson, Mr. Evans, your tactics are rather transparent and frankly quite childish,” Millie said, her voice calm but carrying an edge of steel beneath its softness.

Before either of them could formulate a response, she continued smoothly, “One of you tries to provoke me emotionally, while the other fans the flame and applies pressure. You work together like a well-rehearsed act.”

Millie shifted her attention to Foley, who had been watching the entire exchange with growing discomfort.

“Mr. Carter, I’d like to clarify something. Previously, the capital verification process required submitting various documents for review. But now that conditions are being added at the last minute and the verification threshold keeps being raised, I’m wondering—is there perhaps a more straightforward way to handle this?”

Reuben jumped in before Foley could answer, a smug smile spreading across his face. “Are you trying to hide behind the complexity of the verification process as an excuse for not having the funds?” He paused deliberately, letting his words sink in. “I have a simple suggestion—why don’t we just look at the actual account balance? That would settle everything immediately.” He turned to Foley with an expectant look. “Would that be acceptable to you, Mr. Carter?”
