Chapter 1082:
While various rumors circulated and multiplied throughout their community, Babette felt absolutely euphoric watching the situation unfold exactly as she had orchestrated.
With satisfaction coursing through her veins, she decided to place a call to Egbert.
Egbert had already returned to Fiesta by then.
Following his conversation with Millie days before, he had departed from Crobert shortly afterward. Despite everything, Millie had still insisted on seeing him off at the airport with proper courtesy.
At this moment, Egbert had just completed several tedious business tasks and was sprawled across his bed attempting to relax when his phone buzzed with an incoming international call.
When he saw Babette’s name displayed on the screen, a heavy sigh escaped his lips. Nevertheless, he accepted the call.
“Hello?” Egbert answered without enthusiasm. “What do you need?”
Babette was leaning back comfortably in her expensive office chair, watching the endless flow of traffic moving below the floor-to-ceiling windows of her office.
“Egbert, how have things been going for you lately?” she asked.
“Extremely busy,” Egbert responded curtly. “So, if there’s something specific you need to discuss, please just say it directly. I have numerous matters requiring my attention.”
“Fair enough,” Babette replied smoothly, tapping on her phone to send Egbert a link. “Take a look at this, and you’ll immediately understand why I’m calling.”
Egbert glanced at his screen and opened the link with mild curiosity. His eyes widened as he read the breaking news report about Millie and Charles having their combined one hundred and fifty million dollar investment completely stranded in a failing venture.
His eyebrows drew together sharply, and he sat bolt upright in bed.

“Have you seen it?” Babette asked with barely concealed satisfaction, having heard the sudden sounds of movement through the phone.
“Yes, I’ve seen it,” Egbert confirmed, his voice tight.
“And what are your thoughts?” Babette pressed, desperately hoping to hear words expressing disappointment or criticism directed at Millie.
“Not particularly strong thoughts, honestly,” Egbert replied after a brief pause.
Initially, anxiety had gripped him when he’d first read the headline. But knowing Millie’s methods and her strategic mind, he felt confident she would have contingency plans in place. Even if this investment truly was stranded as the reports claimed, she would discover a path forward somehow.
“What?” Babette’s hopes crumbled instantly, and her voice took on a sneering quality. “Such an enormous amount of money is trapped in a dying company, and you don’t have any reaction whatsoever?”
Egbert lazily reached for the bottle of expensive whiskey on his nightstand and poured himself a generous measure. “That’s correct. She’s perfectly capable of handling this situation on her own.”
Babette’s frustration mounted with each passing second. “You actually trust her that completely?”
Egbert took a slow sip of his drink, his gaze drifting toward the darkening sky visible through his window.
