Chapter 1148:

Earlier in the private room, Foley and the others hadn’t bothered to hold back during their conversation. Trudy had heard everything—Foley’s feud with Spencer, Millie’s part in Yaroslav Technology’s success, and how Charles had managed to seize the opportunity when it came. All of it completely contradicted what she’d been told over the phone earlier.

Sensing Trudy’s unease, Millie grabbed a water bottle and handed it to her.

“You don’t look too well. Are you feeling sick?” Millie asked.

Trudy accepted the bottle and gave a small shake of her head.

“No.” After a long pause, she finally said, “Millie, I had a fight with Charles earlier today.”

Millie stayed silent, giving her space to continue.

“Someone called me,” Trudy said slowly, “and told me you were having an affair and that even though you’re with Myron, you couldn’t let go of Charles.” Her voice faltered as she went on.

“She claimed everything you’ve accomplished, like your success on Heavenly Melody and Yaroslav Technology, was through those questionable means. She even had what sounded like solid proof. I was stupid enough to believe it. But after being around you tonight, I know now it isn’t true.”

The call from Babette had seemed convincing at first. She had sneered that the Bennett family was long gone and that Millie was nothing more than an orphan. With open contempt, Babette had said Millie used nothing but her looks and charm, playing on men’s feelings and manipulating them to climb her way into the comfortable life she now enjoyed. But what Trudy witnessed tonight completely shattered that picture.

Millie hadn’t used anyone; she had been the one lifting others up. Without her stepping in to resolve Yaroslav Technology’s problems, the company wouldn’t even be where it stood currently. If Millie hadn’t introduced Charles to the investment, he never would’ve had the chance to earn such a remarkable profit.

In reality, things were the complete opposite. Millie had never once mentioned her contributions to the public. She simply chose to stay behind the curtain, letting her actions and results speak louder than any words could.

Charles had once told Trudy that Millie winning the championship on the show Heavenly Melody had helped him gain a stable position within the Evans Group, given their partnership. Trudy had once thought Charles was overstating things, but now it seemed completely believable. And now she could see clearly that Millie had absolutely no romantic interest in Charles.

While listening to Trudy, Millie suddenly connected the dots about Charles’ phone call earlier that day. It wasn’t difficult to guess who had started spreading those rumors. It could only have been Babette. The thought made Millie lower her eyes slightly and let out a chuckle.

“Don’t dwell on it too much,” Millie said gently.

“I’d been planning to talk to you about it anyway. There’s truly nothing between me and Charles. As his girlfriend, it’s natural for you to feel protective and curious.”

Millie’s tone was soft but sincere as she met Trudy’s eyes.

“You care because you love him, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

“I just…” Trudy hesitated, her voice thick with guilt.

“I’m so sorry, Millie.”

Millie smiled faintly and reached out to hold her hand. She actually found Trudy admirable. She’d tried explaining the truth to Babette so many times before regarding her relationship with Egbert, but Babette never cared to listen. Trudy, however, was different; she was rational and openhearted.

“You don’t need to apologize,” Millie said softly, still smiling.

“We’re both women. I understand how you feel.”

Trudy looked at her, and Millie nodded in reassurance.

“I really do.” After all, misunderstandings and jealousy were part of love. But Trudy hadn’t lashed out or jumped to conclusions. She had gone straight to Charles, and afterward, she’d come to Millie for clarity.
