Chapter 1250:
Right now, though, she saw Babette’s jabs for what they were—not truth, but twisted reflections of Babette’s own feelings. The digs about Millie “maneuvering between men” were just envy, the sting of Egbert’s rejection festering in Babette’s pride. Babette’s refusal to credit Millie’s real abilities, always dismissing her success as pure luck, was nothing more than an excuse to keep looking down on her.
Fine. Let her believe what she wanted.
Millie’s smile stayed cool, almost playful.
“Babette,” she said, eyes steady.
“What if I told you there really is something going on between Egbert and me? What would you do then?”
Babette’s composure shattered in an instant.
“So you admit it! Finally, you admit what you are!” Babette nearly shouted, her voice trembling with outrage.
“You’re shameless, Millie. You jump from one man to the next!”
Millie regarded her with serene calm, unmoved by the outburst.
“And if I am? If I use every advantage I have and don’t bother hiding it, what difference does it make to you?”
“You—” Babette seethed, utterly convinced Millie was beneath contempt.
“I’ll make sure everyone sees the real you. I’ll rip that sweet mask right off your face!”
“Aren’t you already doing that?” Millie replied, her tone calm and even.
“You’ve been tossing rumors around for months.”
She looked at Babette without scorn, only stating the truth.
Everywhere Babette went, she whispered that Millie was nothing but a flirt, a girl riding on luck.
Now, confronted with her own actions, Babette had nothing to say.
“But you’re wrong about me,” Millie continued, gentle but unyielding.

“No matter how many stories you tell, I know who I am. My conscience is clean.”
She leaned forward slightly, her voice dropping softer still.
“You see me through a narrow lens. You already decided the kind of person I am, and you’ll never let yourself question it.”
Babette’s shoulders trembled as she fought to keep her fury contained. She turned away, eyes fixed on the gray clouds gathering outside.
Admitting the truth was something she could never do. Because if Millie wasn’t the conniving, undeserving girl Babette insisted she was… then who did that make Babette herself?
Why had Egbert—who had every reason to want Babette—walked away to chase after Millie?
What had she done wrong?
No.
Babette squeezed her eyes shut.
This was just another one of Millie’s games—a ploy to mess with her head and throw her off course. She’d almost let herself fall for it.
Focus. She was here to buy shares from Foley.
Her eyes snapped open, resolve returning with a vengeance.
A sharp, dismissive smile appeared as she turned away from Millie to face Foley.
“Forget whatever she’s saying, Foley. I’m waiting for your decision—not hers.”
Millie spoke up before Foley could utter a word.
“His decision is mine, too.”
