Chapter 716:

His hand still cradled hers, providing constant comfort despite his obvious exhaustion.

Millie raised her right hand with tremendous effort, extending her fingers to gently caress his stubbled cheek with feather-light tenderness.

Wordless gratitude flowed through her heart, washing over her battered soul with profound appreciation.

“You should get some rest. I’m fine,” Millie said, her voice still raspy. Myron’s hand closed gently around the one she had resting against his cheek.

“I’d rather stay here with you,” he replied.

Millie’s gaze lingered on his kind expression, and no excuse came to her lips to turn him away.

Suddenly, a knock echoed from the door.

Moments later, Maggie stepped into the room.

“Little Ari wants to see you, Miss Bennett,” Maggie said, her eyes filled with concern as she looked at Millie.

“Miss Bennett, you…” Maggie’s voice trailed off before she could finish, hesitation clear in her tone.

She was clearly afraid of saying the wrong thing and stirring up Millie’s pain. Millie noticed the concern in Maggie’s eyes and chose not to dwell on it.

“Let her in. I’m feeling better,” she said simply.

Millie adjusted her pajama top, realizing it wasn’t the same one she had been wearing earlier. Her eyes flicked briefly to Myron, but she stayed silent.

“The doctor came by and applied ointment,” Myron explained, reading her thoughts. “You woke up several times in the night drenched in sweat, so naturally, I changed your pajamas for you.” Not wanting to dwell on the details, he simply added, “The wounds may itch while they heal. Try not to scratch, and you won’t have scars.”

Millie gave a small nod.

The bandages on her wrists were secure, and she asked Myron to get her a scarf to hide the marks on her neck while Maggie went to fetch Ari.

Soon, Ari burst into the room at full speed.

“Millie!” she called, rushing straight to Millie’s bedside.

“Ari.” Millie’s lips curved into a smile as she reached out to touch Ari’s small cheek.

The bandages on Millie’s wrists caught Ari’s attention, and she gently took Millie’s hands, leaning forward to blow soft breath over them. “Does it hurt?” Ari’s voice wavered, her eyes glistening with tears.

Millie pressed a gentle kiss to Ari’s forehead. “When you blow on it like that, the pain just disappears,” she said with a smile. A sniffle escaped Ari before she could stop it.

From the side, Myron quietly observed the two of them. A knock sounded again, and he went to answer it. Maggie stood there, informing him that Rita had arrived.

Myron gave her a short nod.

Ari soon left for school.

Rita entered to check on Millie’s condition, and Myron stepped outside to give them privacy, his gaze narrowing to a dangerous edge. There were matters he intended to deal with.
