Chapter 857:

“Sure, take your time,” Myron replied with a warm smile.

As she walked past, the ragdoll cat leaped gracefully onto her shoulder, clearly planning to join the expedition.

The late afternoon sun was beginning its slow descent toward the horizon, painting the sky in soft golden hues. Millie, Alexia, and their feline friend made their leisurely way through the mansion’s corridors and out into the peaceful courtyard, where a large ornamental pond sparkled in the fading light.

The water was crystal clear, so transparent that you could see straight to the bottom. Several magnificent red koi glided back and forth through the water like living jewels.

They were undeniably beautiful, though quite pleasantly round from good care. Millie opened the container and scattered some of the colorful pellets across the water’s surface. The koi immediately perked up and swam over eagerly, their mouths creating little ripples as they gobbled up their treats.

The cat perched on the edge of the pond, its eyes tracking every movement of the fish with intense fascination.

Alexia also took a handful of food and tossed it to the waiting koi.

Millie could sense that Alexia had brought her out here for a reason—she wanted to discuss something privately, away from everyone else inside the house. She waited patiently, giving Alexia the space to bring up whatever was on her mind.

“I heard what’s been going on,” Alexia finally began, her voice careful and measured. “About Brandon still trying to win you back. What’s going through your head about all that?”

Meanwhile, across town in his apartment, Brandon’s shirt was completely soaked with perspiration.

One hand pressed against his aching stomach while the other gripped a tanzanite stone so tightly his knuckles had turned white.

He fought against the waves of pain that threatened to cloud his thinking. His focus remained laser-sharp on a single goal.

His mind needed to stay sharp for what he had to do next.

First, he had to find out exactly what was wrong with Vivian’s health.

Then, once he had those answers, he would return every single item that belonged to the Bennett family to Millie.

He would lay his heart bare and tell her everything—all the truths he should have shared with her long ago.

His plan was to clear up every misunderstanding between them, beg for her forgiveness on his knees if necessary, and somehow find a way back into her heart. He was desperate for just one more chance to prove himself worthy of her love.

Even after being rejected so completely, Brandon remained convinced that she had to be his. She belonged with him, not anyone else.

The fact that Myron and Millie hadn’t made their relationship official through marriage gave him hope. In his twisted logic, that meant the door wasn’t completely closed yet.

Sure, Myron and Millie had been intimate, but she hadn’t actually become his wife. That had to count for something, right?
