Chapter 937:

Brandon frequently delegated sensitive tasks to Eugene, trusting him with confidential matters that others in the company weren’t privy to. However, whether Eugene would be willing to share such information without explicit permission from Brandon was something Millie couldn’t predict with certainty.

“Understood. Thank you,” Lynda said briskly before ending the call.

Millie stared at her phone for a moment after the line went dead, then lifted her head to gaze thoughtfully out the window at the sky beyond. If the police were specifically asking about Macauley, that could only mean one thing—Vivian’s case was somehow connected to him. A gentle afternoon breeze stirred the curtains as Millie tightened her grip on the phone, her mind racing with possibilities.

Meanwhile, in a luxurious villa across town, Eugene received a call from Lynda. He glanced nervously toward the closed door that led to the lower levels of the house, and then walked…

Further away to ensure privacy before answering, “Officer Owen,” Eugene said cautiously. “How can I assist you today?”

“Hello, Mr. Barnes. I need to ask about the circumstances surrounding your company’s former procurement manager, Macauley’s, departure.” Lynda’s professional voice came through clearly. “I attempted to contact Mr. Watson directly, but I wasn’t able to reach him, so I’m hoping you might be able to help me instead.”

The basement on the second underground level had been specially constructed with reinforced walls that interfered with cell phone reception, which explained why Brandon’s calls weren’t going through.

Upon hearing that the inquiry concerned Macauley specifically, Eugene felt a jolt of alarm. His eyes instinctively darted toward the direction of the basement entrance.

“Officer Owen, this matter involves sensitive company information,” Eugene replied carefully, trying to keep his voice steady. “I would need to get clearance from Mr. Watson before I could discuss any details. May I ask why you’re investigating the circumstances of Macauley’s departure?”

After listening to Lynda’s explanation, Eugene was completely stunned by what he heard. “What did you just say? Are you absolutely sure?” He could barely process the shocking revelation. How was such a thing even possible? His mind reeled as he tried to make sense of this unexpected development.

He immediately rushed back inside the villa, his shock so profound that he nearly tripped over his own feet in his haste. Instead of heading directly down to the basement, Eugene went straight to his computer and logged into the Watson Group’s internal system. His fingers flew across the keyboard as he pulled up every document and file related to Macauley’s employment history. If what the police were suggesting was actually true, then somewhere within these records would be evidence of a conspiracy that went much deeper than anyone had realized.

At that very moment, two floors below in the soundproofed basement, Brandon’s hand was still gripping Vivian’s tear-streaked face while she alternated between hysterical sobbing and manic laughter. She clung desperately to Brandon’s arm, her voice a desperate whisper as she tried to manipulate his emotions. “Brandon, surely you remember the very first time we met,” she said, her words tumbling out in a rush. “Back then, I was nothing more than a small florist whose only client was the Watson Group. I supplied fresh flowers to the secretarial office and your…”

“…personal CEO suite.” Vivian kept bringing up memories from their past, desperately trying to confuse him and cloud his judgment with nostalgia.

“I used to arrive at the office so early every morning, wanting to do the very best job I could,” she continued through her tears. “There was one particular day when you had worked through the entire night at the office. When I came in that morning to change the flowers, I accidentally knocked over one of the vases. The crash woke you up, and that’s how we had our very first real conversation. Do you remember what you said to me?”
