Chapter 969:
Myron shook his head. “No. Let’s head home.”
“Certainly.” The driver started the engine and eased the Bentley away.
When they turned the corner, the Maybach’s window slid down to reveal Brandon. He watched silently as Myron’s car disappeared, then let his gaze drift toward the pastry shop. His expression darkened.
In all these years, he realized, he had never once brought Millie a simple treat. The only gift he had ever chosen for her with care was the bottle of perfume she’d left behind in the house they once shared after she moved out. From the driver’s seat, Eugene studied Brandon’s reflection and seemed to guess his thoughts.
For a man like Brandon, wealth was never the issue.
Whatever he wanted could be delivered to his door—entire collections of luxury goods for each season, if he so desired.
But true consideration lay in noticing the quiet preferences of another. Eugene exhaled softly and signaled to an assistant to buy one of each pastry from that shop and send them over.
Brandon sat alone in the back seat.
He wasn’t fond of sweets. Yet he suddenly remembered how Millie used to wait for him at home, preparing his favorite meals with patient care. A dull ache tugged at his chest.
He took a bite of one of the pastries. Sugar melted across his tongue, but to him, the sweetness tasted bitter.
Meanwhile, Millie and Helga returned from their shopping trip.
Helga lingered only briefly. She had already accomplished what she set out to do—spending time with Millie and showing her off to the world.
Helga wanted everyone to know she had fully embraced Millie as her future daughter-in-law.

Back home, Millie watched the servants unpack her purchases, feeling oddly distant.
Her old image of Helga as a serene and delicate lady now seemed incomplete. On the drive back, Millie had mentioned it.
Helga had simply replied, “There’s no need for pretense in daily life. After Myron’s father passed, he was sent to sea with his fate uncertain. I had to raise Adriana and Jayceon alone in Crobert. Even the gentlest nature hardens in time. I know you and Myron met at sea. You have my full support.”
Millie’s thoughts then wandered to Nicole. After a moment’s hesitation, she gathered a few pieces of jewelry and some handbags and went to Nicole’s residence. She paused at the doorbell and then pressed it.
Nicole herself opened the door, surprise written all over her face. “What brings you here?” she asked.
Millie’s lips parted, but no words came.
Nicole waited. At last, Millie held out the gifts.
“I went shopping earlier,” she said softly. “I remembered the things you like and chose a few for you.”
Nicole’s eyes moved over the jewelry and bags. Each piece suited her taste perfectly; it was clear Millie had chosen them with care.
Nicole accepted them without a word.
