Chapter 979:

“Mr. Watson wanted me to pass this along,” Eugene said kindly. “He said that, during the divorce, you took nothing beyond the Bennett family’s assets. This is Mr. Watson’s way of making it up to you. With your new company just getting started, he thought this might help with your expenses.” Eugene’s sincerity was unmistakable.

Millie had worked with him in the past and recognized that he meant well. But she’d made up her mind long ago, after the divorce, she would only ever claim what was rightfully hers, nothing more.

With a polite smile, Millie refused the money.

Money mattered, of course, but her approach was always to rely on strategy, not handouts.

Earlier that morning, her secretary had asked, “Mr. Watson sent over bouquets for the grand opening. Do you want to accept them?”

The secretary, well aware of the history between Millie and Brandon, waited for her answer.

After a brief pause, Millie shook her head. She decided it was best to decline.

While the gossipers kept busy trading theories, a sleek car pulled up outside the venue.

Myron emerged, his smile soft and reassuring as he made his way inside. As he moved through the crowd, Myron’s gaze lingered on a few faces, his easy smile growing just a touch wider.

He didn’t say a word, slipping inside ahead of everyone else. Adriana and Jayceon trailed after him, their conversation continuing as they entered.

Jayceon leaned over and said, “You know, Millie’s really something. The other day, Myron tried to give her literally half of his assets, and she flat-out turned him down.”

Adriana wasted no time giving Jayceon a light smack on his head.

“Owl!” Jayceon yelped, rubbing the spot with an exaggerated frown.

“You clearly don’t get it,” Adriana said. “Millie’s not the type to chase after money. That’s exactly why she said no. Most people would jump at the chance.”

Jayceon pouted. “Can you just talk without hitting me every time?”

“Where’s the fun in that?” A sly grin crossed Adriana’s face. “Besides, Millie’s going to be your sister-in-law soon. Show her some respect.”

Grumbling, Jayceon mumbled something under his breath.

Adriana rolled her eyes. “Did you even listen to me?”

When she lifted her hand again, Jayceon gave in right away. “Alright, alright, I got it!”

Only then did Adriana lower her hand, clearly pleased with herself.

She turned to the nearby group of men, those same ones who’d been gossiping a minute ago, and called out, “Don’t you think I’m right?” As always, Adriana’s words carried weight.

A chorus of nods followed Adriana’s words.

Nobody dared challenge her.

When it came to Millie, plenty felt comfortable whispering about the so-called fallen heiress, but no one wanted to risk crossing the Elliott family.

It was the classic case of picking on the vulnerable and staying quiet around the powerful.
