Chapter 985:

Babette froze. He could mean any number of things. She had enough half-baked plots that even she had lost count.

Brandon caught the flicker of panic in her eyes and let out a short, cold laugh. “I hear you’ve been gathering the former Bennett employees who refused to follow Millie,” he said. “And planning to build a new investment department.”

Babette’s eyes widened. That plan was only in the early stages—how could he possibly know?

The faint mockery on Brandon’s face deepened. “This is the Watson Group,” he said flatly.

As CEO, nothing inside the company escaped his notice. He simply chose not to act unless the line was crossed.

“What exactly are you trying to prove?” His tone hardened. “I warned you before: if you want experience, join any top securities firm in Crobert. But don’t target Millie.”

“I’m not!” Babette blurted, a hint of panic creeping in. “I’m simply setting up a new department. These people already worked in this field. If they’re staying with Watson Group, they need a relevant division. Besides, many of them have strong ties to MKK. Their presence benefits the company.”

In truth, she wanted Egbert to see her as the one with real ability.

If only all the former Bennett employees had stayed. They were skilled professionals who had contributed enormously to Watson Group, especially in maintaining the powerful connection with MKK.

Brandon’s brow furrowed. He studied her in silence, and then said quietly, “Babette, this is beyond you. Stop now while you can still walk away with dignity.”

Babette couldn’t hide the anger written all over her face.

She had earned her degree from one of the most prestigious universities in Flesta and had successfully managed countless high-stakes projects throughout her career. The idea that she could somehow lose control of a situation was absolutely ridiculous to her.

In all the years that Millie had worked at Watson Group, Babette had never once witnessed any performance that could be called impressive or noteworthy. As far as she was concerned, Millie had accomplished absolutely nothing of significance during her entire time there.

From Babette’s perspective, only someone who was truly incompetent could have achieved so little despite having both a personal connection to Brandon and the full resources of the Watson Group backing her up.

If Babette had been in Millie’s position, her name would have been known and respected throughout all of Crobert by now.

Brandon could see the skeptical expression on Babette’s face, and he had a pretty good idea of what was going through her mind at that moment. He let out a long, weary sigh and turned his attention to the view outside the window.

The truth was that, over all those years, most of Millie’s real accomplishments had never been publicly credited to her name.

Instead, the recognition and praise had been quietly transferred to Brandon and the Watson Group as a whole.

This deliberate misdirection had been part of their strategy while they worked together to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding James’ death.

As a result of this carefully constructed facade, most people in their industry believed that Millie was nothing more than a trophy wife with no real substance or business skills.
