It is said that the women of Annenburg are always eager to marry into the Johnson family.
The women in Wiltspoon aspire to join the Yorks and become young mistresses, drawn not only by the Yorks’ wealth and status but also by the special affection of their men.
After walking halfway around FC Manor, both the older and younger wives felt fatigued and decided, in unspoken agreement, to turn back without continuing further.
Sonny, still a child, struggled to walk such a long distance and asked his aunt to carry him on her back for the return journey.
As Serenity carried Sonny, she said to Jane, “Right now, I really miss Zachary. If he were here, I wouldn’t have to carry Sonny.”
Jane burst into laughter.
“Young Master York would be upset to hear that! He would surely say you only think of him because of someone else’s man.”
Serenity felt a slight blush and replied, “You often hear similar complaints from Young Master Johnson. His tone is quite similar to my family’s.”
Jane said, “No, it’s Ben who frequently complains. He’s envious, believes I’m too good to my son, and predicts he’ll end up as someone else’s man in the future.”
Serenity remarked, “It’s no surprise they can be friends; they’re quite alike.”
“Would you like me to carry him for a bit?” Jane offered, reaching out to take Sonny from Serenity’s back.
Serenity quickly stopped her, saying, “You shouldn’t overexert yourself after giving birth. Sonny is light enough for me to carry.”
Even as Sonny fell asleep, Serenity worried he might tumble, so she had to lean forward to keep him secure, making it difficult to walk.
Though Serenity declined Jane’s help, Jane didn’t insist but instead made an internal call to request assistance from a maid.
arranging for someone to arrive by electric scooter. Soon, a maid arrived in an electric car.
“Young Mistress,” the maid said respectfully as she stopped the vehicle and addressed Jane.
Jane responded, “Hand me the key to the electric car.” The maid complied, giving Jane the key. Jane then hopped into the electric car, driving Serenity along with her, and asked Serenity to hug the sleeping Sonny as they headed back to the main house.
Jane remarked, “The villa is quite large. Next time, we should ride bicycles to explore the entire place at once.”
Serenity replied, “When I returned to Wildridge Manor, I rode a bicycle with Zachary to tour the grounds. It was a great way to enjoy the beautiful scenery and get some exercise. However, Zachary’s cycling skills leave much to be desired. I sat on the back of his bike, always worried it might tip over. Whenever the front wobbled, I would jump off quickly.”
Jane visualized that scene. Young Master York might have ridden a bicycle as a child, but he has since been driven around in luxury cars. Had he not married a practical wife, it’s likely he would never have touched a bicycle again. It’s understandable that he struggles with riding.
Upon returning to the main house, Sonny remained asleep in his room while Jane took Serenity to the hospital to visit Lilian.
This was not Serenity’s first encounter with Dr. Carden, but she always felt intimidated by her and hesitated to get too close. Dr. Carden seemed rather stern.
Zachary had mentioned that Dr. Carden was the only outstanding student of a renowned physician, who had adopted her and raised her as his daughter. Not only did she possess exceptional medical skills, but she was also an expert in poisons. Compared to the old gentleman doctor, everyone was cautious around Dr. Carden.
If one were to be poisoned by her, she could certainly provide the antidote, but the experience of being tortured by her would be excruciating.
Poison can numb your scalp and leave a lasting shadow. After Lilian gave birth, she could have been discharged from the hospital shortly after, but her partner gently persuaded her to remain for two additional days. Unable to resist his coaxing, she readily agreed.
