Mrs. Lane brought tea and fruit snacks for the two esteemed guests. After Elisa sat down, she took the opportunity to hug the child and embraced Avah once more, despite her future mother-in-law’s presence. The little baby gazed at Elisa with her large, bright black eyes and soon smiled at her.

Elisa exclaimed, “Avah smiled at me!” The baby’s smile filled Elisa with such joy that she couldn’t resist kissing Avah’s tiny face several times. Alannah, who was quite pleased with Elisa, the future youngest daughter-in-law, also appreciated Jane, the oldest daughter-in-law. However, Elisa’s personality closely resembled Alannah’s, which often helps like-minded individuals bond more easily.

With a smile, Alannah remarked, “Avah’s smile indicates that she likes you very much.” Jane added, “Avah must have inherited her father’s personality. Although she’s just a few months old now, her traits will become more apparent in a few years. She usually doesn’t cry much and is generally quiet.”

It was unlikely for Avah to smile at someone she had only met a few times. Elisa had only seen Avah twice before today, yet the baby smiled at her. “It’s good that she resembles her father; he’s a wonderful person,” Elisa commented.

Serenity leaned in and teased, “You must be thrilled to see you brought your two children here.” Alannah replied, “Exactly! The old lady held Avah and wouldn’t let go. If she weren’t Avah’s actual grandmother, I wouldn’t have been able to get her back.”

Serenity rubbed her stomach and mused, “I can’t tell if this baby is a boy or a girl, but my intuition says it’s a boy.” Her in-laws had high hopes for her child, believing, as their master had foretold, that she and Zachary were destined to have both sons and daughters.

“All my children are doing well,” Alannah reassured Serenity, drawing from her own experiences. “Whether it’s a son or a daughter, it’s all good.”

As long as you discipline your children well and nurture their talents, parents will find happiness. I have two sons and no daughters, which I regret, but at least I will gain two daughters-in-law. A daughter-in-law can be just like a daughter. I see Elisa as my future daughter, and I treat both Elisa and Jane equally.

Elisa blushed slightly, but generously expressed her feelings. She chose a partner not just for his abilities but also for his family background. She believed that a mother-in-law who prioritizes the future can be challenging to interact with. Growing up, she observed her grandmother being overly critical of her mother. Despite her mother’s many strengths, including her ability to navigate both social and domestic spheres, she still faced scrutiny.

Elisa hoped to find a sensible and reasonable mother-in-law in the future to minimize conflicts between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. This is why she was initially drawn to Zachary—not only for him but also for his family. In fact, she found Zachary’s mother, Tania, to be an excellent mother-in-law. Although Tania didn’t initially warm up to Serenity, she never acted against her daughter-in-law. When others criticized Serenity, Tania defended her fiercely and never spoke ill of her outside the home.

Tania was respectful of her son and daughter-in-law’s choices and avoided intruding in their lives. Alannah, on the other hand, was easy to get along with; she didn’t carry the airs often associated with wealth.
