Liberty’s trust brought a small sense of happiness to Duncan.
“Mr. Lewis, you came over to eat, right? I helped you choose the menu based on your preferences and ordered the kitchen to prepare it. You can enjoy it after a while. But now, I need to head home.”
She had been out running errands all morning. With many tasks awaiting her at home, she knew it was time to return. Although Seren was capable of handling things, she wouldn’t allow her sister to intervene or rest properly, especially given how severe her pregnancy symptoms were. How could she let her sister take on more work?
Understanding that she was preoccupied with her younger sister’s outing, Duncan suggested, “I’ll take you home and we can have dinner there. Is that alright? I haven’t had the chance to enjoy Mrs. Lane’s cooking in a long time, and I really miss it.”
Liberty didn’t decline his offer, replying, “Then wait for me here; I’ll just grab something inside.”
“Alright,” Duncan responded.
Liberty returned to the restaurant to fetch her belongings. Once she walked away, Duncan turned to the bodyguard behind him and instructed, “Have someone look into Mr. Giles.”
To successfully navigate rivalries in love, it’s crucial to understand both oneself and the competition.
“Understood,” the bodyguard replied, promptly taking out his phone.
His boss and Miss Liberty had finally reached this point in their relationship. While they didn’t have a clearly defined connection, at least she no longer rejected him. It was critical not to interfere at such an important moment.
The bodyguard believed his boss had a better chance of winning, though he was still disabled and relied on a wheelchair, which left him feeling somewhat uneasy.
Just as the bodyguard finished his call, both he and Duncan turned their attention to an approaching car. The person who stepped out was Liberty’s ex-husband, the last person she wanted to see.
Hank was making good progress in his recovery. Although he had not fully healed, the doctor evaluated his condition and approved his discharge from the hospital so he could recuperate at home.
He had spent an extended period in the hospital, which had taken a toll on his family, particularly his parents. If he remained hospitalized any longer, their financial situation would become untenable. Consequently, Hank insisted on being discharged.
Once he was home, he found it difficult to avoid thinking about his sister’s restaurant, especially after hearing her mention it several times. Each time Hank saw Liberty thriving post-divorce, it weighed heavily on his heart. However, he knew he could not delve into divorce again; he was mired in feelings of regret and jealousy regarding Liberty.
While still in the car, Chelsea turned to her younger brother and said, “Hank, look, that man in the wheelchair is here again. He comes here every day, and I hesitate to show up for fear that Liberty will see me. But I know that Mr. Lewis visits daily. Sometimes, he even picks up Sonny from kindergarten. Seeing how well they get along makes me feel sorry for you. Sonny is your biological son, and you’ve been paying child support. Meanwhile, Liberty seems to have grown closer to Mr. Lewis, and I worry she may be ready to marry him.”
Hank remained silent for a long moment before responding to his sister, “Sister, we’re here today to make amends with Serenity. There’s no need to dwell on other matters. Even if Liberty does marry Mr. Lewis, Sonny will always be my biological son; that fact won’t change. Let’s get out of the car and greet Mr. Lewis.”
If Liberty were to remarry, it would ultimately be a positive development for everyone involved.
Sonny is fortunate to have a stepfather like Duncan, as he’s a better influence than his biological father. Hank visited the ghost gate and returned, realizing that he could no longer earn money from online ride-hailing in the short term. He would have to rely solely on his parents’ pension to get by. Hank felt unable to provide his son with a better environment for growth, so it was in Sonny’s best interest to be with Liberty and Duncan. Duncan’s affection for Sonny was genuine and heartfelt. Although Hank was reluctant to acknowledge it, he had to concede the truth. The siblings exited the car and approached Duncan. When Duncan spotted Hank, he straightened up; despite his inability to stand fully, his presence was just as commanding as Hank’s.
