Zachary immediately declined without hesitation. He said, “I’d prefer to walk and keep an eye on your sister-in-law from behind. She’s tired from walking, so I can carry her back.” Callum replied, “Brother, you spoil your wife too much. We’re about to be overwhelmed here. Leave us a way to survive.” Serenity was skilled in boxing and martial arts. Even though she was pregnant, her belly wasn’t showing yet, and she was expecting again. If she felt unwell in the morning, it wouldn’t stop her from wanting to walk. Why did Zachary insist on walking so far only to carry Serenity on his back? Zachary replied innocently, “I’m just doing what I want, and I genuinely care for my wife. I don’t want to get involved with anyone else.” After Callum choked, he smiled and said, “Yes, yes, brother, you really don’t want to get involved with anyone. You’re setting a great example for us; we all look up to you. Brother, are you sure you don’t want to ride in the car? Then I’ll leave first.” Seeing that Zachary still refused to accompany him, Callum had no choice but to drive off alone.
After catching up with the three women ahead, Callum slowed down and honked his horn. Rosella turned around, glared at him, and said, “Stop honking; you’re making too much noise and scaring my daughter-in-law.” “Mom,” Callum said with a flattering smile, “Would you like to get in the car? Camryn brought a lot of things for you. I can’t carry everything by myself, so I might as well drive up to the house and stop.” “You can drive your car. We’ll walk slowly, chat, enjoy each other’s company, and take in the scenery.” Wildridge Manor was beautiful year-round. This wasn’t the first time Camryn visited Wildridge Manor, but she had been blind in the past. Even when Callum described the manor to her, she couldn’t truly appreciate it. Now that she could see, she could only focus on things up close.
While distant objects appeared blurry, she walked slowly to fully appreciate the beautiful scenery of the manor. Callum glanced at Camryn, who smiled back at him. As he drove away, he wore a smile but feared that if he walked too slowly, his mother would reprimand him for interrupting their conversation. After honking the horn several times, everyone teased him about being scared of Camryn, the person he cherished most. He couldn’t bear the thought of frightening her, and besides, Camryn was strong and not easily intimidated.
“Camryn, this is your home too. When you come back, don’t feel the need to buy us so many things. We have everything we need. Just make sure you and your friends visit us on weekends to keep us company. Sharing meals and conversation brings us more joy than gifts. We’re older now and prefer not to go out much; staying in the manor can be quite dull. At least we can play cards to pass the time,” Rosella said.
Serenity listened to Rosella’s words and couldn’t help but stifle a laugh. She recognized that the elders in the family were enjoying a fulfilling retirement. Camryn replied warmly, “Mom, if you don’t mind, Callum and I will come back on weekends.”
“How could I mind? You’re still young and don’t understand the loneliness we feel as we age. As we grow older, we look forward to spending time with our children and grandchildren, hoping they will always be there for us,” Rosella responded.
“Mom, you’re all still young; you don’t seem old at all.” Camryn remarked, noting how well the wives of the York family were maintained, looking as if they were in their thirties. After regaining her sight, Camryn was amazed by her mother-in-law-to-be’s youthful appearance. The two women stood together like sisters.
Chuckling to the side, he said, “Camryn, you missed the main point of Aunty’s words. The essence of what she meant is that the house is filled with children and grandchildren, and she desires more grandchildren.” Camryn’s expression brightened as she replied, “Callum and I can get married whenever we wish, but having children might take a few years.” “Are you facing any challenges?” Serenity inquired with concern.
