“Get more,” Carrie said. “I don’t have much money right now. I’m so broke that I can hardly afford to eat.” Trenton replied, “Second sister, you can find a job. As long as you’re willing, there are jobs available no matter what. If you’re not starving, it’s only the lazy who will starve.” Carrie responded with a frown, “What kind of job should I even consider? Do I, the second daughter of the Newman family, need to work? My parents always said I was meant to be a rich lady and deserve to be pampered. If Camryn hadn’t frozen my bank card, I wouldn’t be in this situation. Do I really need you to lecture me?”
Trenton’s expression darkened. “Second sister, I’m not lecturing you. I’m just saying that things are different now. We have to work hard to earn money to survive. You shouldn’t be afraid of your bank cards, even if your eldest sister froze yours. Your incompetence led to the freezing of your account, and now you’re facing obstacles everywhere.”
Carrie said, “Fine, get me the money quickly. I know you want to help that blind woman. You both have different fathers but the same mother, so we’re related. I still don’t understand what kind of soup she fed you to earn your trust. She’s going to take over our family property and make it hard for us to survive, and yet you stand by her. You’re being foolish. Just because she didn’t freeze your bank card, you think she’s being nice? Let me tell you, she’s just manipulating you. Once she takes over our property, she’ll definitely cast you aside, and then you won’t have anyone to turn to.”
Carrie couldn’t comprehend why Trenton, also a child of their parents, chose to side with Camryn instead of her and their parents. “My eldest sister is not that kind of person,” Trenton insisted.
Angrily, Trenton exclaimed, “Second Sister, if you say that again, I won’t give you any money. If you don’t want to starve, find a job to support yourself.” Occasionally, Trenton took on part-time work when he had some extra time, even though he already had enough money. He simply wanted to be self-sufficient. Carrie replied, “Okay, okay, I won’t say anything else; let’s just get this done.” She was trying to persuade Trenton into giving her money, but she fell silent. Then, she quickly urged him to go inside and help her collect the cash. Trenton was aware that Carrie was just manipulating him, but he couldn’t ignore the fact that she was his biological sister. He also recognized her bad temper and the way their parents had spoiled her. She was willful and lacked life skills; even with a small fortune to her name, her bank card was frozen, preventing her from accessing the funds. Eventually, Trenton went back into the house to retrieve some money for Carrie.
Callum heard footsteps in the kitchen and stepped out to see Trenton entering. He asked, “Trenton, who’s here so early in the morning?”
“My second sister,” Trenton replied. “My eldest sister’s bank card was frozen, and she came here to settle the account. When she found out my brother-in-law was here, she left quickly.” Trenton’s statement was partly true and partly false. Although Carrie was scared of Callum, she hadn’t actually left. Callum’s dark eyes flickered as he said, “Don’t worry about her.” With that, he turned back to his work. Trenton felt relieved that Callum didn’t question his words, but he also felt a twinge of guilt for lying. He hurried upstairs.
