Sonny was persuaded to calm down, and his anger faded away. He said, “I heard Grandma Lewis mention that you went to find my mom. I miss her.”
“I’ll bring you here as soon as you finish school this Friday, and then I’ll take you back on Sunday afternoon, okay?” Duncan promised Sonny.
This way, he had a valid reason to fly over and keep Liberty company on Friday.
Sonny asked, “Really? Uncle Lewis, you’re not lying to me, are you? I’ve always said that Uncle Lewis tells the truth. He’s the most honest.”
After some thought, Sonny concluded that Duncan was generally truthful, so he replied, “I believe you, Uncle Lewis. Will my mom let us go? Will our visit disrupt her work?”
Duncan informed Sonny that Liberty had been extremely busy lately.
Sonny understood that Liberty was working hard for his sake; she wanted to earn enough money to provide him with a good life.
Although Sonny felt content with his life and didn’t want to work as hard as Liberty, he recognized her determination and wanted to support her.
Duncan explained, “No, we’re coming over for the weekend, and your mother needs to rest. We’ll help her unwind and take her mind off things. This will help her feel better, and when she returns to work next week, she will be more efficient.”
Sonny hesitated but insisted, “Uncle Lewis, please let me ask my mom if she really agrees.”
Duncan smiled and handed the phone back to Liberty so she and Sonny could discuss it. Ultimately, Liberty could not refuse Sonny’s request to come over on Friday.

being late.”
Liberty had also expressed a desire to see Sonny. With Duncan by his side, nothing would go amiss. After receiving Liberty’s approval, Sonny felt delighted and ended the call shortly after. He handed the phone back to Serenity.
With a smile, Serenity asked him, “Are you no longer upset? Do you not feel wronged?”
Sonny replied cheerfully, “I can visit my mom on Friday! Auntie, what day is it today?”
Serenity responded, “It’s Monday.”
Sonny inquired, “How many days are there from Monday to Friday?”
He didn’t have a firm grasp on the number of days in a week, as his mother had only taught him the basics. He even questioned her once about the absence of Mondays and Sundays.
Serenity answered, “There are four days.”
Sonny counted on his fingers, realizing that four days was not a long wait. His expression transformed from gloomy to bright, and he excitedly told Titus, “Titus, I can see my mom in just a few days! Do you have to go home today? Why don’t you come with me to find her?”
Titus felt a twinge of envy toward Sonny. Although Sonny’s parents were divorced, they were both alive, allowing him to see them whenever he wanted. They also loved him dearly.
In contrast, Jane was not Titus’s biological mother but his adoptive one. He had no knowledge of his real parents, as Jane had always been open with him, explaining that she had found him.
Despite having Jane, his uncle Ben Johnson, and his master, who cared for him, Titus longed for the experience of knowing his biological parents and what they looked like.
However, Titus’s envy was fleeting. Being just a child of three or four years old, he would quickly forget about his parents if someone played with him.
Titus said, “I’m going back in the afternoon. If I don’t, my teacher will punish me for being late.”
“Walking on horseback and punishing me for copying medical books.” He was capable of writing, yet the punishment for copying medical texts felt excessively harsh. He did not fear physical punishment or reprimands; rather, he dreaded the possibility of his master’s retribution for writing and reproducing medical books.
