“Hank surely still thinks of you fondly,” Duncan said.
He didn’t mind Hank speaking poorly of him in front of Sonny.
Hank always claimed that the more Sonny disliked him, the stronger the bond between Duncan and Sonny became.
Duncan recognized that Sonny was particularly kind to him whenever he returned from Brown’s house.
Sonny likely felt sympathy for him.
This was due to Hank’s negative comments about him.
“He lost love for me long ago. If he truly loved me, he wouldn’t have betrayed or hurt me, nor would he have allowed his family to mistreat me during our marriage. If a man genuinely loves a woman, how could he stand by while she is bullied? Even if there are conflicts between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, he should find a way to resolve the issues instead of letting his parents and sisters blame her.
He is simply emotionally unbalanced. As I mentioned before, if Hank and Jessica had lived happily without all these complications, and neither of them lost their jobs, they would have enjoyed life and awaited new beginnings. When a new life is on the way, how can I care about whether I live or die?
My feelings for Sonny will diminish because of their affair. Hank’s feelings for Sonny have never been profound; he has never truly cared for his son. How much affection can he really have?”
Duncan pondered for a moment and hummed.
Duncan then said, “Let’s avoid discussing those people and topics that bring negativity. I’ll be returning to Wiltspoon tomorrow. Liberty, please join me in shopping for some new clothes and toys for Sonny. Help me pick out toys that he will actually enjoy. Every time I give him something, he doesn’t seem to like it.”
Liberty didn’t want to dwell on her ex-husband constantly. Although she had already come to terms with everything, she still worried that mentioning her ex-husband in front of Duncan would make him feel jealous.
After the car accident, Duncan became significantly more vulnerable. His leg disability affected his self-confidence, leading to increased sensitivity.
Liberty was very cautious in her interactions with him, concerned about damaging his self-esteem.
Liberty hadn’t purchased new clothes for Sonny in a long time.
There was no need for her to do so. With so many people spoiling him, Sonny had more than enough clothes, shoes, and toys.
Even his collection of school bags was extensive, with dozens of new ones on hand.
Once they enter kindergarten, new school bags are typically given out, one for this child and another for that one.
Liberty felt that Sonny had so many items that he could practically open a store.
“I didn’t mention it to Sonny, but I came to see you. He was already upset. If I don’t bring him some gifts back, he’ll be even angrier. Let’s choose a larger size so he can still wear it next year.”
Liberty smiled and replied, “That’s your decision.”
The two shopped late into the night. Initially, they had agreed to buy just two sets of clothes and two toys, but by the time they returned to the hotel, they were laden with large and small bags.
Once back in the room, Duncan took pictures of their haul and sent them to Zachary so he could show them to Sonny.
After receiving the photo from Duncan, Zachary responded with a voice message: “Sonny is already asleep. He has kindergarten tomorrow. I’ll show him the pictures when he wakes up.”
“Tomorrow,” Duncan said. “Forget it; I’ll return tomorrow. When I do, I’ll pick him up from kindergarten and surprise him again.” Zachary smiled and asked, “Okay, will you be back tomorrow?”
