Carrie’s mother prohibited her from smoking. While she allowed Carrie the freedom to do as she pleased, the smell of tobacco was something she detested. If Carrie’s father smoked, her mother would send him to the study to sleep.
Her mother often mentioned that Carrie would marry into the York family and become a young lady. She warned that if Carrie smoked, the elders of the York family might disapprove, which could diminish her chances of marrying into such a wealthy family.
However, nowadays, Carrie neither smoked nor had any prospects of marrying into the richest family.
Instead, she had become the mistress of a middle-aged man.
She blamed Camryn and Serenity for her situation!
Whenever Carrie reflected on her current circumstances, she felt a deep resentment toward Serenity and Camryn, practically grinding her teeth in anger.
“If you don’t know how to smoke, you can always learn. Sometimes, smoking a couple of cigarettes can help lift your spirits if you’re feeling down,” Mr. Labbe said as he handed Carrie a cigarette and assisted her in lighting it.
Carrie took two puffs and immediately began to cough violently.
Mr. Labbe chuckled and remarked, “Just get used to it. Learning to smoke is easy, but quitting is quite challenging.”
Once her coughing subsided, Carrie shared, “When I was in a bad mood, I used to go on shopping sprees, buying anything I liked, regardless of its usefulness. Shopping always made me feel better.”
Mr. Labbe pinched her cheek and replied, “Your method of coping is not something most people can afford.”
Carrie retorted, “My parents adored me and provided everything I wanted. I never lacked for money and lived a comfortable life. That blind woman, Camryn, is even worse than a servant. She’s not independent at home, sharing a room with a servant because there are no other rooms available. If it weren’t for Serenity, I wouldn’t have offended Mr. York, and our family wouldn’t be in this predicament. That blind woman…”
Camryn has healed her eyes, regained her sight, and married Callum. Why are she and Serenity so fortunate? It’s clear that both of them come from a different background than hers.
Carrie’s words were laced with deep hatred and intense jealousy. She was simply envious of them. Mr. Labbe bit her on the cheek, extinguished his cigarette, turned over, and pinned her down again. He said, “You have pleased me. I will give you whatever you want and whoever you want to deal with. I’ve helped you manage it.”
Carrie quickly put out the cigarette. After the clouds and rain, she felt drowsy. Pulling the quilt over herself, she yawned and said, “Mr. Labbe, don’t lie to me. You are all I have now.”
And the pie that Mr. Labbe painted for her.

Mr. Labbe remarked, “You went to see the eldest daughter of the York family today.”
She was very tired, while Mr. Labbe seemed to be in good spirits.
Carrie replied, “Yes, I went to the bookstore and made up an excuse to buy a set of materials for junior high students. It cost a few hundred dollars. Mr. Labbe, I must tell you, the face you gave me was incredibly useful. Serenity didn’t even recognize me.”
Feeling terribly sleepy, Carrie suddenly felt energized, opened her eyes, and told Mr. Labbe, “I stood right in front of her on purpose, but she didn’t recognize me at all.”
Mr. Labbe responded, “Exactly, not everyone can manage a face that looks so fake. Since she didn’t recognize you, you should feel more confident and shed any guilt or fear. They said you shrank back when you saw Mr. York’s car! It’s easy for them to become suspicious of you like this. They will suspect and target you if you don’t offer any assistance. You will take all the benefits you receive.”
“Come back; I won’t engage in loss-making business,” he said, his voice firm. As Mr. Labbe spoke, his strong hand tightened around Carrie’s neck before releasing it. Despite the briefness of the grip, Carrie’s face went pale, and she broke out in a cold sweat.
Just moments ago, Mr. Labbe had exuded enthusiasm that made Carrie feel drawn to him, but now she feared for her life. The murderous intent she sensed from him made it clear that failing to meet his demands could lead to her death.
He had claimed to have blood on his hands and countless lives taken!
He truly was a devil!
