Carrie and Mr. Labbe ended their phone call without exchanging many words.
Mr. Labbe simply asked her where she had been and when she would return home.
After hanging up, Carrie felt a strong urge to leave the bookstore. She glanced at the three young women still seated in front of the cashier, along with several bodyguards standing or sitting near the entrance.
A wave of jealousy washed over her.
Although it was a small bookstore, there were six bodyguards present. Serenity and the others each had two bodyguards accompanying them.
When Carrie went out, she was also accompanied by two bodyguards, but they treated her with respect while appearing indifferent when not in her presence. They monitored her every move, word, and action, ensuring she adhered to their requirements. In contrast, the bodyguards of Serenity and her friends seemed entirely different.
Serenity didn’t even recognize her, likely due to her altered appearance.
Although Camryn was her biological sister, she had been blind for ten years. Even if she regained her sight, it was said that her vision would not be fully restored. She could only see things directly in front of her clearly, while objects further away remained blurred.
This was akin to extreme myopia.
In retrospect, Camryn likely didn’t have a vivid impression of Carrie’s current appearance.
Initially, Camryn recognized Carrie’s voice, but Carrie could easily alter her voice when speaking later.
With these thoughts in mind, Carrie returned to the bookshelf, picked up a set of informational books along with the book she had accidentally damaged, and approached the checkout counter with a smile. She placed the books on the cashier’s counter and, using the voice modulation techniques she had practiced over the past few days, deliberately changed her tone as she asked Serenity, “How much are these books?”
“Total?”
Camryn approached Carrie, narrowing the distance between them. She gazed intently at Carrie, recognizing both the figure and the voice. While the voice sounded familiar, the face did not match her memory.
After regaining her sight, Camryn recalled their previous encounters and Carrie’s distinct appearance.
Serenity announced the total, and Carrie proceeded to scan the code for payment. As Serenity placed the book into a bag and handed it to Carrie, she accepted it with a smile for the three young women before departing.
The two bodyguards from the Labbe family hesitated to pick her up, as their vehicles were parked a distance away. However, they knew that failing to adequately care for their boss could raise suspicions.
Consequently, the Labbe family bodyguards drove over, and one of them emerged from the car with an umbrella. As Carrie exited the bookstore, he approached, offering her shelter from the rain and respectfully said, “Madam, please be careful.”
Carrie remained silent as she made her way to the car.
Shortly thereafter, she drove away.
Once Carrie had left, Camryn stepped out of the bookstore, stood at the entrance, and watched the car disappear. She then inquired of the bodyguard, “Which car did that woman leave in just now? I heard someone refer to her as ‘Mrs.’”
The bodyguard responded, “The wife’s bodyguard came to escort her, and she left in that vehicle. You heard correctly; she was indeed called ‘Mrs.’”
What a young lady; she appeared to be in her early twenties!
Camryn furrowed her brow. If that woman was married and had bodyguards, then she couldn’t be Carrie. Yet, her figure and voice bore an uncanny resemblance to Carrie.
The young woman seemed to be approximately the same age as…
Carrie.
“What’s wrong?”
Serenity and Jasmine emerged and stood beside Camryn, gazing outside. Serenity asked Camryn with concern.
Camryn replied, “The woman who just left feels familiar, but looking at her face, I’m certain I’ve never seen her before.”
“Do you feel the same way?” Serenity asked, astonished, as she shared the same feeling.
