“Grandma, all of our brothers were educated by you. If you dislike us, it would mean you’re denying your own accomplishments as a teacher.”
Grandma May was left speechless.
Her beloved eldest grandson, Zachary, was becoming increasingly articulate, all thanks to her influence since he married Serenity, her granddaughter-in-law.
Serenity’s smile never wavered.
Every time Grandma May argued with Zachary, Serenity laughed until her stomach hurt.
“Seren, let’s ignore him. He has a serious demeanor and is so serious all day long. You’re the only one who can tolerate him. If it were any other woman, she would have run away by now. Children cry when they see him out at night.”
Zachary’s expression darkened.
Serenity replied, “No, I actually think Zachary is wonderful. He’s not cold at all. In fact, he’s gentle and considerate with me, making him an ideal husband. I’m very happy.”
Zachary’s mood lifted immediately. “My wife treats me well.”
Grandma May smiled and remarked, “You two could drive a single person crazy with your displays of affection.”
“Grandma, don’t you enjoy seeing how affectionate we are?” Zachary asked her playfully.
Grandma May chuckled, “I’m delighted, truly delighted to see you so taken by Seren. Oh, I remember someone swearing he wouldn’t fall for Seren or pursue his wife.”
Zachary’s face turned a shade of green. “Grandma, please stop bringing up the past.”
Serenity interjected firmly, “My man is my man; there’s no escaping me.”
“How domineering! Grandma loves your assertiveness!”
Grandma May and Serenity exchanged smiles, leaving Zachary behind as they headed into the house first.
Zachary shook his head in affectionate exasperation.
Grandma May was like a mischievous child.
She was also the anchor of their York family.
As long as Grandma May is around,
They believe there is no reason to fear if the sky falls, as Grandma is there to support them.
Liam and Tania, who were seated on the sofa waiting for Zachary and Serenity to return before starting dinner, noticed Grandma May and Serenity approaching, prompting them to stand.
“Mom, you’re back,” Liam exclaimed.
Grandma May responded with a hum.
“Come back and check in once you’ve had enough fun,” she said, glancing at Tania, who also went by “Mom.”
“Tania, why didn’t you reach out to me when you were feeling down yesterday? I would have taken you out for a few days to help you unwind.”
Tania’s face flushed red.
Nothing ever escaped Grandma May’s notice.
“It’s nothing, really. We just had a minor disagreement; it wasn’t a full-blown quarrel,” Tania replied.
“Exactly! Mom, Tania and I didn’t argue. Tania missed Serenity and came to spend time with her for a few days. I can’t bear to be away from my wife, so I came along too. Now that you’re back, the place feels lively,” Liam added.
Grandma May had always been a loving and indulgent mother-in-law.
She believed that her daughter-in-law, though not her biological child, deserved respect and support within the York family. Tania had been a tremendous asset to the family, which is why she received such affection.
Those of them who were sons were the biological offspring of their mother, so it was natural for them to show her filial respect. But what could they possibly want in return?
Dare they voice it?
Grandma May could easily chase them from mountain to mountain with her crutches if she wished.
“You didn’t argue, but you still made my daughter-in-law unhappy,” Sam interjected.
As the butler…
In the old house, Sam had ears and eyes everywhere, making him Grandma May’s most effective spy. Whenever the old lady wanted information, Sam was there to provide it. Grandma May often suggested that Sam should join the Bucham family, believing his skills could easily elevate him to Josh’s level, potentially pushing everyone else aside. Josh wiped the sweat from his brow, relieved that Sam had not joined the Bucham family to compete with him for a position.
