Evan didn’t manage to escape, and now it was too late.
He forced himself to remain seated, turning his head to look at Abby beside him. The weight in his dark eyes made it difficult for Abby to fathom his thoughts.
Leaning closer, Abby bent down, reducing the distance between them to the point where Evan could catch a whiff of her subtle fragrance.
He couldn’t identify the perfume she wore. It wasn’t overpowering, but it was light and pleasant.
“Evan,” Abby softly called his name.
“You speak, and I will listen,” Evan replied gently.
Abby asked, “Can I ask you something? What are your feelings towards me? Are you being nice to me because you’re interested in me? If that’s the case, why are you ignoring me?”
Evan’s gaze was intense; he pursed his lips and replied in a low voice, “You’ve asked more than one question.”
After a brief pause, he continued, “If I say I’m unsure about my feelings, will you scold me? Will you think I’m a jerk?”
He genuinely wanted to pursue her. He admired her qualities and acknowledged that his grandmother had good taste.
Even without Abby, Evan believed he could lead a fulfilling life, even if he didn’t love her.
Her vibrancy, boldness, bravery, and uniqueness captivated him, making him realize that she was the one he genuinely liked.
The ever-changing fox.
Not a wealthy daughter like Abby.
Abby’s beautiful eyes sparkled, likely realizing that Evan couldn’t provide a clear answer.
She straightened up, placed her hands in her trouser pockets, and looked down at him.
Evan was momentarily taken aback, sensing that her stance and expression resembled that of a cunning fox.
However, while the fox projected arrogance, Abby radiated a different kind of confidence. There was still a sense of vulnerability beneath it.
differences.
“Evan, if you don’t like me, why do you approach me and treat me so well? With your charm, you should realize that when you are kind to a woman, she cannot resist your advances. Don’t tell me you only want to be friends; I don’t believe in pure friendship between men and women.”
After a brief pause, Abby continued, “Maybe it exists, but such pure friendships are extremely rare. Evan, give me a satisfactory answer. From now on, let’s go our separate ways and not interfere in each other’s lives.”
Abby didn’t want to be constantly led by Evan.

She wanted to understand the situation before making a decision.
Even though Evan was wonderful and had deeply touched her heart, she knew his feelings were not with her. She would not force him, no matter how tempted she might be.
She realized that pursuing this unreciprocated love would lead nowhere sweet.
After a moment of silence, Evan picked up his wine glass, downed its contents, and refilled it. He then spoke softly, “Whenever we brothers reach marriageable age, Grandma chooses our wives. She gives us a year to pursue our partners. Both my second and third brothers have gone through this, except for the eldest brother. Now that my second and third brothers are happily paired with beautiful women, it’s my turn.”
“I’m the fourth brother and will be twenty-nine soon, so I’m old enough to marry. In the past, I had older brothers who served as shields, so I wasn’t pressured to marry. But now that the three older brothers have found their loves, it’s my responsibility.”
“Grandma has also selected a candidate for me. Honestly, I have no idea when she made this choice. All I received was a photo along with basic information about the girl, including her…
“Name, age, and where she is from—such simple information,” she said.
“No more will be lost,” Grandma remarked, “Women are like books. Let us be the ones to turn the pages. Each time we do, the content changes. It is through this process that we become truly interested in reading.”
Abby then asked him, “Am I the wife your grandma chose for you?”
Evan nodded sincerely. “It’s you.”
