Chapter 611
“Zachary doesn’t fully consider me family either. What right does he have to demand complete openness from me when he can’t do the same? He’s being hypocritical. He insists on having the final say in everything. When things don’t go his way, he gets angry and claims I don’t view him as family.”
“I got angry too and told him he was self-centered and narrow-minded, which led him to hang up on me. When I messaged him, he refused to respond. This is his typical behavior—he stops replying to my messages whenever he’s upset, and he ignores my calls too. He’s acting like a petulant woman.”
Mrs. Lane was left speechless.
Zachary was indeed like that. Serenity’s assessment was accurate.
From a young age, Zachary was groomed as a successor, with all his younger brothers looking up to him.
Once he took charge of York Corporation, both Old Mrs. York and his parents stepped back, allowing him complete control of the company. Within York Corporation, his word was absolute.
His brothers and everyone in the company deferred to him.
His naturally domineering personality, combined with that environment, positioned him at the center of everything. He was accustomed to exerting authority and having people submit to him.
However, Serenity’s life experiences made her unwilling to let him dominate her. She was not used to obeying him in all matters or relying on him.
Zachary felt neglected by Serenity.
He believed she didn’t give him enough attention and didn’t treat him as family.
But, as Serenity pointed out, was he completely honest with her?
Perhaps he deleted my contact again.
“If he did, I’ll never add him again!”
Mrs. Lane replied, “Mr. York can be quite overbearing. He feels you don’t pay enough attention to him and that you’re excluding him.”
“I’ve already explained myself, but what can I do if he remains stubborn? He can stay angry if he wants. Anyway, out of sight, out of mind. Let’s not discuss him anymore. Let’s eat.”
With that, Serenity took a bite of another sandwich.
She finished two sandwiches, a plate of pancakes, and a cup of coffee.
Mrs. Lane worried that she had eaten too much.
However, Serenity wasn’t overeating. She had a large appetite and was indulging a bit more due to her anger. It wouldn’t harm her.
Still, she had a headache and her eyes ached.
She sat on the swing chair on the balcony for a while before heading back inside to search through the cabinets.
“What are you looking for, Ms. Hunt?”
After washing the dishes, Mrs. Lane came out of the kitchen to find Serenity searching. “I cleaned the house, so some items might not be where they usually are.”
“I’m looking for the home first-aid kit. It’s a white box I ordered online; it’s our family medicine box.”
Mrs. Lane hummed in understanding, went into the guest room, and soon returned with the medicine box. “I placed it in the guest room. Are you feeling unwell?”
“My head and eyes hurt. It’s just because I didn’t sleep well. I’ll be fine after taking a painkiller.”
As Mrs. Lane opened the medicine box, she watched Serenity snap a painkiller from the sheet and pop it into her mouth.
Mrs. Lane quickly poured her a cup of warm water.
“Do you often get headaches, Ms. Hunt?”
“No, just occasionally. The medicine works quickly, so I always keep it at home.”
Mrs. Lane replied, “You should still use it sparingly. The medicine has side effects.”
“I don’t use it often. The pharmacist also informed me about the side effects when I purchased it. I only take it when I have headaches and pain behind my eyes due to lack of sleep.”
She only had the medicine because she needed to return to the store today.
Ten minutes later, Serenity grabbed her purse and car keys and said to Mrs. Lane, “Let’s go, Mrs. Lane.” “Mop the floor first, Ms. Hunt. You go ahead; I’ll take a cab later,” Mrs. Lane replied, wanting to wait until Serenity left so she could call Zachary.
