Chapter 866
After struggling to divert his gaze from Serenity, Zachary quietly followed his sister-in-law out.
Taking a paper and pen, Serenity wrote an apology and left her name and phone number so she could discuss repairs when the person reached out.
Noticing that the anti-theft lock had not been used, Serenity placed the note on the pedal and secured it with the lock. Once that was done, she exited the parking garage.
She spotted her sister and nephew, but Zachary was nowhere in sight.
“Liberty, is he gone?”
“You bought a lot of items. Zachary volunteered to carry them upstairs for you.”
Serenity pursed her lips and said nothing further.
“You claimed you were just going out for a ride, yet you ended up at the supermarket. I can’t leave you and Sonny alone in there; you shop until you drop.”
Liberty, holding her son, chatted with her sister as they climbed the stairs.
“Retail therapy is the best remedy when you’re feeling down. You leave the store feeling rejuvenated.”
Liberty burst into laughter. “You and Sonny are just there for the snacks. You won’t admit it, though.”
By the time the sisters reached the top, the door was wide open.
Zachary was waiting for them at the entrance.
“I put everything away, Liberty.”
Zachary spoke to Liberty, but his gaze remained fixed on Serenity.
“Thank you, Zachary.”
Zachary quickly replied, “Call me if you ever need help with any heavy lifting. I’m always here.”
Liberty smiled and responded, “There isn’t much heavy lifting. It’s cold outside today. Don’t just stand there; come in and enjoy a hot drink before you go.”
Zachary looked at Serenity, waiting for her to respond.
Liberty carried her son into the house.
Serenity followed closely behind her, gazing straight ahead as she brushed past Zachary. She stepped into the house and entered the kitchen. Standing there, Zachary was filled with disappointment; Serenity did not invite him in for a hot beverage.
Soon, Serenity emerged from the kitchen with a glass of steaming hot water. She set the glass down on the coffee table. It was boiling!
Turning to her sister, Serenity said, “I’m going to get some rest, Liberty. I have work tomorrow.” Without sparing Zachary a glance, she turned on her heel and went into her room.
Once Serenity closed the door behind her, Liberty turned to the dazed man. “Zachary, Serenity poured you a drink. Why don’t you come in for a warm-up?”
“Oh.” Snapping back to reality, Zachary quickly stepped inside. He glanced toward Serenity’s room.
Liberty said, “I wouldn’t bother if I were you. You won’t be living with your wife anytime soon.”
Zachary struggled to accept that notion. It had taken him a while to adjust to sharing a bed with someone. Now that he had become accustomed to wrapping his arms around his wife at night, he was bound to face sleepless nights due to this sudden change in sleeping arrangements.
The nights felt long. Alone in an empty bedroom, Zachary could find companionship only with his pillow.
He took a seat on the couch, and since Sonny had always been fond of him, the little boy slipped out of his mother’s embrace and climbed onto Zachary’s lap.
“Uncle Zack.”
“Sonny.”
Zachary held the little guy with one hand while picking up the glass of water with the other. It didn’t take long for…
Long before Zachary set the glass down, it had become scalding hot!
