Nevertheless, Josh was an exceptionally intelligent man.
Every time Josh invited her son to dinner, Mrs. Sox would sigh to herself. She would be overjoyed if Josh asked her daughter out instead, often laughing in her sleep at the thought.
Josh responded earnestly, “Mrs. Sox, I’m not pretending to be Jasmine’s date. To clarify, I’m pursuing Jasmine, and she hasn’t agreed to be my girlfriend yet.”
Mrs. Sox held the phone away from her ear, double-checking that she had dialed the right number. After a moment, she placed the phone back against her ear and asked, “Are you really Mr. Bucham?”
“It’s me, Mrs. Sox.”
“Did you say you’re pursuing Jasmine and not Drake?”
Josh replied, “Mrs. Sox… I’m straight. I’m only interested in women.”
In his mind, he lamented, ‘Both my future mother-in-law and Jasmine seem to suspect I have feelings for Drake.’
Interestingly, Mrs. Sox didn’t discourage him from asking Drake out despite her doubts.
The old woman was quite open-minded.
“But you’re so kind to Drake that I thought you might be in love with my son. I often discuss with his father what we should do if our son has a husband and whether he would be able to accept it. You should see the look on his face.”
Josh was momentarily speechless.
“Mrs. Sox.”
Raising a hand to his face, Josh explained, “I like your daughter, Jasmine. I was only nice to Drake because he’s Jasmine’s brother. I was trying to impress my future brother-in-law and earn his favor.”
“Hasn’t Jasmine joined us every time I asked Drake out?”
Mrs. Sox burst out laughing. “I understand now! I’m relieved that you’re not interested in Drake that way. At least I don’t have to worry about accepting a man as my son’s partner. Come here, honey. I have some good news for you.”
You don’t need to worry about your son bringing home a man.
“Mr. Bucham isn’t infatuated with Drake; he’s actually smitten with our daughter. I suppose you could say he has an ulterior motive. Hahaha. I can’t believe someone is interested in our Jasmine!”
Josh was speechless.
So was Jasmine.
Was she really that undesirable?
Many guys had crushes on her, but she wasn’t looking for a relationship. She preferred to enjoy her single, free life rather than risk getting hurt.
Love had caused pain for Seren.
“Mrs. Sox, I’m serious about Jasmine. Although I haven’t won her heart yet, I’m trying. I hope you’ll give me a chance and not pit me against other love rivals.”
Mrs. Sox was overjoyed, mainly because someone wanted her daughter. Noticing that Jasmine didn’t shy away from Josh, she realized her daughter was attracted to him.
With a smile, she replied, “I’ll give you every chance you need. I really like you. I told my husband how wonderful it would be if you fell for Jasmine instead. I can’t believe my dreams have come true. I’ll let her aunt know to disinvite the date. Please come with Jasmine to her aunt’s later.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Sox.”
Josh knew just the right words to say, making Mrs. Sox delighted.
Jasmine watched as Josh engaged in a lively conversation with her mom. Keeping her family’s knowledge of Josh’s interest a secret was the right choice. Just look at her mom!
