Chapter 896
“Why are you suddenly considering making money? Are you short on cash?”
“I have a few hundred thousand in my savings account. I’m not poor, but I wouldn’t say I’m wealthy either. Elisa shared a lot with me, and I need to reflect on the gap between Zachary and me.”
Jasmine inquired, “Are you no longer angry with him?”
“Regardless of my feelings, I need to think about my future with him.”
Serenity sighed. “I just wanted to marry an ordinary man. How did I end up in such a deep pit? Now I can’t find a way out. Elisa mentioned that even if I file for divorce, I won’t be able to leave unless Zachary agrees.”
“If you dare to file for divorce, he’ll keep you trapped in the house for life.”
“Please stop mentioning that. It only makes me more upset.”
Serenity took a bite of honeydew. “This melon is really sweet.”
“Of course! I picked it myself. Initially, we worried that Elisa would turn against you when she found out, but based on her reaction, she’s still being reasonable. Although she’s angry, she doesn’t blame you.”
“If Elisa wants to assign blame, it should be towards the fact that Mr. York and she weren’t meant to be. After all, Mr. York never had feelings for her or made any promises. She has every right to like him, just as he has the right to reject her.”
“You only need to focus on the reality of your situation with Mr. York. Don’t concern yourself with anything else.”
Serenity set down her fork and sighed again. “Let me think this through on my own.”
Everyone was trying to persuade her.
“Okay, I won’t say anything further. You can reflect on it yourself. I’ll support whatever decision you make. Aren’t you going to eat anymore?”
“Hungry.” Jasmine didn’t press her. Those who had been hurt by love often reacted this way; some drowned their sorrows in food, while others neglected to eat or sleep. As the sky gradually darkened, footsteps could be heard outside. Soon, Grandma May and Tania walked in.
“Grandma May.” Jasmine had never seen Tania before and hesitated to greet her. Serenity stood up. “Nana, Mom, what are you doing here?” Jasmine then recognized that the woman accompanying Grandma May was Zachary’s mother, who was also Serenity’s mother-in-law.
“We came to apologize. Seren, I was the first to lie to you. If you want to blame someone, blame me. What happened to your hand?” Grandma May approached Serenity to offer her personal apology, admitting she was the one who had initially deceived her.
“I accidentally cut myself with scissors. It’s nothing serious,” Serenity replied as she invited the two women to sit down. Jasmine poured them water and discreetly stepped away.
Grandma May recounted how she had pressured and persuaded Zachary to marry Serenity out of gratitude for her kindness. In closing, she said regretfully, “Seren, Zack lied to you because I instigated it. If you want to blame anyone, blame me. That’s all I have to say. I won’t keep you any longer. We’ll head back now.”
Serenity stood to see them off. Despite Grandma May and Tania’s insistence that it wasn’t necessary, she insisted on escorting them. After bidding them farewell, Serenity called Zachary, who picked up on the first ring.
“Zachary, please pick me up after work. We need to talk at home,” she said. Zachary felt a wave of anxiety wash over him, his palms becoming clammy, and he quickly replied, “Okay.”
