Chapter 903
After Zachary cleared away all the bottles and glasses, he slumped onto the table and mumbled, “Serenity, Serenity… It doesn’t have to be you…”
At first, Josh and Duncan didn’t hear him clearly.
He kept murmuring, and it was only when Josh leaned closer that he caught Zachary saying, “It doesn’t have to be you, Serenity.”
“What’s he saying?” Duncan asked curiously, noticing Josh’s strange expression.
Josh straightened up, glanced at the drunken Zachary, and replied to Duncan, “Since his sudden marriage, he’s gotten drunk several times over Serenity.”
Initially, when Zachary and Serenity signed the agreement, he felt dejected by her indifferent attitude. He had invited his friends out for drinks, got drunk, and it was Jim who ended up bringing him home. That was also the first time Jim appeared in front of Serenity as a substitute driver.
“He said, ‘it doesn’t have to be Serenity.’ Hah!”
Josh chuckled at his intoxicated friend. “Why don’t you say that to Serenity’s face? What’s the point of saying it to us here? I dare you to go to Serenity and tell her you don’t need her.”
Zachary abruptly stood up, grabbed Josh’s shoulders, and shook him vigorously while yelling, “What else do you want from me, Serenity? I was wrong, so I apologized! I even let you return to your sister!”
“What more do you want? I’m telling you, as long as I’m willing, there’s a whole line of women out there who want to marry me! You’re not my only option!”
Josh felt dizzy from the shaking and, upon hearing Zachary’s ramblings, couldn’t help but respond, “You’re right. You can divorce her and marry someone else then.”
“I’m yours! I just want you… I only want you. I won’t let you go. I refuse to sign a contract, so don’t bring it up again. I already burned it and flushed it down the drain. You can only be my wife…”
After violently shaking Josh, Zachary collapsed onto the couch like a deflated balloon. He slumped back and closed his eyes while continuing to mutter, “Serenity… Serenity… I will support you. I can afford to support you…”
“Don’t leave me… I need you… Mine. You’re mine…”
Zachary’s mumbling grew softer until he fell silent.
He drifted off to sleep.
Josh and Duncan exchanged glances.
Josh remarked, “Thank goodness he didn’t confuse me for Serenity.”
Duncan asked, “Were you worried he might kiss you?”
“I was terrified he would mistake me for Serenity, kiss me, and then force himself on me. You have no idea how scared I was. Do you think I should play dead or fight back if he tries to assault me?”
Duncan was left speechless.
He turned to Zachary and said, “This isn’t the Zachary I know.”
Josh responded, “Don’t say that. You’ll turn out like him too when you fall in love with a woman and have arguments. You might even be crazier than he is.”
“The woman who can make me fall in love isn’t in this world yet. I’ll just watch as you both fall in love, get married, and become fathers.”
Duncan had encountered countless women, but none had made his heart race or inspired him to settle down.
His best friends had both found partners they liked. While they enjoyed sweet moments, they also faced challenges. The Zachary York of the past was always calm and composed; he had never lost his temper like this.
Remaining single seemed preferable.
“You’re exaggerating. Maybe the woman who can make your heart flutter is right beside you.”
“Anyway, help me lift this drunkard and get him to my car. I’ll send him home. Can you take a cab back by yourself?”
“Yeah.”
Duncan assisted in picking Zachary up. “He’s completely out of it. There’s no one to look after him if you take him home. He’ll catch a cold if he stays on the ground all night.”
