Emily Blair didn't slow her pace until they'd made it a fair distance from the lake.
Elizabeth Wilson jogged to catch up, slightly out of breath. "Could you not walk so fast? I can barely keep up with you."
"Maybe you need to work out more," Emily replied coolly.
Elizabeth put her hands on her hips and clicked her tongue. "This is all Andrew Lane's fault, having a meltdown out of nowhere. Here's an idea: let's go back, dump the water bucket over his head, rough him up a little to blow off some steam, and then leave."
"Go ahead," Emily said.
Given permission, Elizabeth immediately rolled up her sleeves, ready for action.
Emily added, "If you want to spend the night in jail, be my guest. I'm not coming to bail you out."
Elizabeth let out a dramatic groan, then hooked her arm around Emily's neck. “Oh, come on. Are you really still mad about this?"
Emily started to answer, but her gaze fixed suddenly on one of the sightseeing shuttles pulling up nearby.
Seated inside were Benjamin Gomez and Juliana Silva.
“What's up?” Elizabeth followed Emily's line of sight, squinting as she tried to make out the faces. “Is that Benjamin Gomez? When did he get back? And who's that woman with him?"
Emily set the water bucket down. "Let's watch a little longer."
Elizabeth frowned in confusion. "Watch for what?"
Emily's voice was calm, but her words dropped like a bomb. "That woman with Benjamin Gomez is Juliana Silva. I think Juliana Silva might actually be Isabella Austin."
Elizabeth's eyes nearly popped out of her head. "You're kidding. What makes you say that?"
"I don't have proof," Emily admitted, shaking her head. “But the timing makes sense. Isabella Austin dies, and right after that, Juliana Silva shows up at Benjamin's side. Juliana Silva has never been seen with him before. It's just too much of a coincidence."
If anyone else had made such a wild claim, Elizabeth would have laughed in their face. But this was Emily Blair. Emily didn't speak without reason.
Elizabeth was floored. "If that's really Isabella Austin, then some people really are too toxic to ever disappear."
Emily's voice dropped to a murmur. “Let's just see. I want to know if Juliana Silva and Andrew Lane have any contact."
She had never doubted that Andrew Lane had loved Isabella Austin. But in the days after Isabella's “death," Andrew had been disturbingly calm—or at least, that's how he seemed to her. He hadn't shown a flicker of grief, not even the slightest trace.
Emily had once wondered if Andrew was simply hiding his pain, keeping his emotions tightly locked away. But seeing Juliana Silva suddenly appear at Benjamin Gomez's side made her question everything.
What if Isabella Austin wasn't dead after all? What if Andrew knew and had even helped her disappear, provided her with an escape route? That would explain his total indifference right after her supposed death.
Once the idea took root, it only grew stronger.
Emily stood watching as Benjamin Gomez and Juliana Silva got off the shuttle together. Neither spared Andrew Lane so much as a glance. They walked well away from him, sat down at the far end of the lakeshore, and picked up fishing rods, casting lines into the water.
For a while, nothing happened. Andrew Lane didn't approach them, and the two made no move to talk to him, either.
Elizabeth finally broke the silence. "Well, that was a whole lot of nothing."
Emily glanced over the scattered groups near the three of them. “Come on, let's go.”
"You're not going to watch anymore?" Elizabeth asked, raising an eyebrow.
Emily bent to pick up the water bucket. "If I'm right, then their relationship is something they can't let anyone see. With all these people around, there's no way they'd risk talking. I should've realized that."
Elizabeth nodded, understanding dawning. "Right."
Emily's expression was icy. She'd have to find another way to prove the connection between Juliana Silva and Isabella Austin.
