Chapter203
I found it ridiculous. “You’re a grown man, not an idiot, and definitely not some clueless kid who doesn’t understand what love is. You know better than me how Alicia feels about you.‘
“But I only like you,” Jonathan blurted out.
I froze for a second, and so did he.
#
After a brief pause, he turned his head. “I don’t have any feelings for her, Elise. It’s just something passed down from the last generation. I had no choice but to look after her. You know how Grandpa treats her.”
“Evenso, the two of us were never meant to be.
I stayed quiet for a long time, not wantingtoargue. “You’ve hurt me too many times. If I hadn’t been so blindly in love with you before, I would’ve left long ago. Maybe the memory loss was just me trying to save myself.”
“I didn’t want to stay, but I couldn’t bring myself to walk away. So, I forgot everything, hoping the 18–year–old version of me would finally make the choice to leave you.”
“Impossible.”
Jonathan dismissed what I said without a second thought. “You love me. You would never want to leave.”
He brushed his fingers near my eyes. “You just forgot how you felt about me. Once those memories come back, divorce won’t even be on your mind.”
He seemed completely convinced of that. I shoved him away, staring at him in disbelief.
“When Alicia and I both fell into the pool, you went straight for her. You didn’t even look at me. And now you’re standing here saying you love me? Don’t you see how your actions completely contradict your words?”
Jonathan sighed. “How could I possibly choose to save her? If it ever came down to two choices, I’d always choose you. You weren’t even a choice. You were the only answer.” 2
“Then why did you save her?”I asked.
I felt like he was just saying all this to make
feel better.
“I already toldyouthat I didn’t know you were in the water too. If I had known, I wouldn’t have spared a glance at anyone else,” he said.
I scoffed. “And how doIknowifyou’re even telling the truth?”
Jonathan looked at me” “y.
“I don’t
lie, and I have no reason to lie about something like this.”
“Then why didn’tyou saythat in the first place?”
I still didn’t buy it, thinking he was just making things up to get me to stay.

“Youonlycarenow because I started ignoring you after losing my memory. This isn’t love. It’s just possessiveness and the need to stay in control. If I were still the old Elise, youwouldn’t have even lookedatme.”
“That’snot true.”
Jonathan held my face in his hands. His eyes suddenl
y softened with
a trace of pain.
“So,that’s what you’ve believed all this time? You lost your memory,so you don’t remember how strong our relationship was. I thought I didn’t have to explain it,” he said.
“Not explain what? You seriously think something this big doesn’t need any explanation?”
Jonathan gave me a helpless look. “You lost your memory, soyoudon’t remember ho
deep our love used to be. That’s whyyoubelieve I would leave you behind to save Alicia. But if you could remember it, you’d know that between you and her, I would never choose her over you.”
He made it sound so convincing and righteous, but I didn’t believe a word.
“Ifwhat we had was really that strong, people wouldn’t look down on me all the time. They wouldn’t say you and Alicia are the ones who belong together. Even she had the nerve to threaten me to my face. And you expect me to believe there was nothing between you two?”
He frowned. “When did she threaten you?”
I sneered. “Of course, in your eyes, she’s always the innocent little girl. I’m the one who’s constantly causing trouble. Isn’t that right?”
