Mr. Bennett Thompson appeared calm and composed as always, but his grip on Yvonne's hand was a little too tight, his palm slightly damp.
As they walked out of the hospital, he shielded her carefully, as if worried someone in the crowd might bump into her.
"Are you hungry? What would you like to eat?" Bennett asked, carefully fastening Yvonne's seatbelt. He adjusted the strap, making sure it didn't press against her abdomen.
āI'm a bit tired. I just want to go home," Yvonne replied, leaning back against the seat, looking drained.
They had been up late last night, and the morning had started with a jolt of abdominal pain, leaving her completely exhausted.
"Then we'll eat at home. I'll ask Helen to make some of your favorite dishes." Bennett immediately took out his phone and called Helen, asking her to prepare a few extra things.
Only then did Bennett start the car's engine.
It was the first time Bennett had ever driven so slowly, but the ride was incredibly smooth.
Yvonne had almost fallen asleep by the time they arrived home.
Bennett carried Yvonne from the garage all the way back to their apartment, treating her as if she were a delicate porcelain doll.
"Where have you two been? You left this morning without even having breakfast,ā Helen asked, puzzled.
Helen had been out walking Bullet earlier that morning, so she had no idea Bennett had taken Yvonne to the hospital.
"Yvonne wasn't feeling well, so I took her to the hospital," Bennett explained.
"What's wrong? What did the doctor say?" Helen asked with concern.
"Yvonne's pregnant. Just about six weeks," Bennett replied. His tone was calm, but
his eyes held an undeniable glimmer of joy.
Hearing the news, Helen was naturally overjoyed.
"This is wonderful news! The
Thompson family is finally getting a new little member. You can leave Yvonne and the baby to me. L promise I make sure theyre both healthy and well-fed."
With that, Helen bustled back into the kitchen to start preparing a nutrient-rich, high-protein meal for her. After eating her fill, Yvonne went back to her foom to catch up on sleep. By the time she woke up, was already evening.
Bennett was sitting by the bed, head bowed over a book, turning the pages with the quietest of movements.
"You're awake?" Seeing Yvonne's eyes open, Bennett placed his book on the nightstand and gently touched her forehead.
In the early stages of pregnancy, a woman's body temperature is slightly higher than normal, so her forehead felt a little warm.
The night before, when Bennett had held her, he'd noticed she felt warm. He'd assumed it was just the heat of their passion, never imagining that Yvonne was actually pregnant.
"Does your stomach still hurt?" Bennett asked, his hand moving from her forehead to rest gently on her lower abdomen.
Yvonne sat up in bed, her hair tousled and her eyes still hazy from sleep. She shook her head and said, "No, it doesn't hurt anymore."
The medication must have worked wonders. After a long sleep, the pain was completely gone.
But Bennett's hand remained on her abdomen, his gaze softening with incredible tenderness.
"There's a little life in here... our little life. It feels like a dream."
After Yvonne's supposed death, it was as if Bennett's heart had died with her. He'd become a hollow shell, throwing himself into the most dangerous missions, fearless of injury or pain. The only thing that kept him going was the singular goal of bringing the Walker crime family to justice.
He never imagined his lost love would return, let alone that they would be creating a new life together.
Everything now felt so beautiful it seemed unreal, like a dream. He was terrified he would suddenly wake up to find Yvonne still buried in a cold grave, and he would be all alone again.
