To Jennifer, Celia was the type to see the good in everything and everyone, simply because of her love for one person.
Thanks to Caitlin, Celia had started to look at Eldermere in a new light.
Jennifer couldn't deny it―Caitlin was an impressive woman.
But no matter how remarkable Caitlin was, she simply couldn't compare to Dr. Oracle.
Jennifer had never believed, not for a second, that Dr. Oracle could be from Eldermere.
Most people would have thought twice before speaking so bluntly to Celia.
But Jennifer was different.
Not only was she Valerium's top female bodyguard, she had also grown up with Celia. Officially, she was Celia's protector, but in reality, the two women were as close as sisters.
They agreed on almost everything.
But right now, it was clear they'd hit a rare point of disagreement.
Celia shook her head. "It's not about blind loyalty. The truth is, we've
underestimated Eldermere all along. There's something about that place—I have a feeling Dr. Oracle absolutely is from Eldermere."
Seeing how insistent Celia was, Jennifer decided not to argue further. She smiled and said, "Miss Palmer, there's a saying in Eldermere: 'The facts will speak for themselves.' Whether Dr. Oracle is from there or not, we'll know once we find
him."
And when that time came, Celia would see just how wrong she was.
"You're right," Celia nodded. "The facts will speak for themselves."
Jennifer continued, "By the way, are you sure you don't want to tell your mother about this?"
She was referring, of course, to Celia taking herbal medicine.
"No need," Celia replied, shaking her head.
Her mother was already suspicious of everything, especially after losing one son and watching the other fall ill. Now, she was always on edge.
If her mother learned about the herbal medicine, she would definitely try to stop her.
Celia could already picture the argument.
If she told her mother now, there was no doubt she'd be forbidden from taking the remedy.
So, this had to be kept secret.
Jennifer hesitated, concern flickering in her eyes. "But... what if something goes wrong? If you take the medicine and there's a problem, I..."
Celia's status was special—she was the family's only daughter. If anything happened and Jennifer hadn't warned anyone, she'd be held responsible.
Even if she and Celia were close as sisters, in the end, they weren't truly family by blood.
If disaster struck, Jennifer would pay the price too.
"There's no 'what if'!" Celia cut her off, firm and decisive. "Miss Gonzales is a brilliant doctor-she could raise the dead, I trust her completely!"
From Celia's perspective, Caitlin was too honest to give false hope. If she couldn't help, she'd say so straight out, not offer an eighty percent chance.
So Celia believed her.
Jennifer looked at her. “Miss Palmer, I'm not questioning Miss Gonzales's skill or integrity, but you shouldn't get your hopes up too high. Sometimes, the greater the pope, the greater the disappointment."
Celia wanted so badly to be cured, to live like a normal person. Jennifer couldn't bear to imagine what would happen if, in fifteen days, Caitlin brought only bad
news.
Celia smiled at Jennifer, her tone
light, almost breezy. "Honestly, I never expected to be cured. If, after
fifteen days, nothing changes, it won't be Miss Gonzales's faulte Some people are just unlucky, that's all.
She'd lost count of how many times she'd dared to hope, only to be let down.
By now, she was used to it.
Jennifer could only sigh.
If it were possible, she would have taken Celia's place in a heartbeat. Then Celia glanced at her. "You should go. I'd like to rest for a while."
"Alright." Jennifer nodded and quietly left.
No sooner had she stepped outside than a young woman approached, eyes bright with curiosity Jennifer is true? I heard Miss Palmer met a legendary doctor today, and there's finally hope for her illness?
This was Joie, one of Celia's personal attendants.
The family had kept Celia's illness a closely guarded secret-everyone who
worked near her had signed confidentiality agreements.
Joie had seen firsthand what happened when Celia's illness struck.
It was terrifying.
Despite being a noblewoman's daughter, Celia was always kind. She never treated the staff harshly; in fact, she often handed out bonuses.
So, when Joie heard there might be a miracle cure, she was genuinely happy for
her.
Jennifer shook her head. "I have no idea. We'll see in fifteen days. But honestly, let's not get our hopes up too high about doctors from Eldermere."
There was another reason Jennifer distrusted Eldermere's physicians.
Every time the world debated Dr. Oracle's true origins, it was always the people from Eldermere making the biggest fuss, throwing out so-called 'evidence' that, on closer inspection, fell apart completely.
As far as Jennifer was concerned, the people of Eldermere were all talk-and only wanted to claim Dr. Oracle as their own.
