Chapter 1527:

The servant scrutinized their attire with thinly veiled judgment before responding in a glacial tone. “Please wait while I inform her of your arrival.”

“Very well.”

Karina and Corrine lingered at the threshold.

After what felt like an eternity, the servant returned and swung the door open wider. “You may enter. Miss Hamilton is currently occupied. Please wait in the living room until she becomes available.”

Karina and Corrine exchanged glances before crossing the threshold one after the other.

Whether it was their lack of the distinctive bearing that marked true heiresses or simply the household staff’s inherent snobbery, they found themselves utterly ignored once inside—not even offered the courtesy of water or refreshment. They were merely abandoned to wait in isolation. The wall clock ticked away, but Amelie never appeared.

Eventually, Karina summoned the servant to inquire again, only to be met with unconcealed contempt. The woman’s features tightened with barely contained impatience. “As I previously stated, Miss Hamilton is engaged with matters of significance and cannot be disturbed at present. Are you incapable of exercising basic patience?”

With that cutting remark, the servant muttered something inaudible beneath her breath and swept from the room.

Karina expelled an exasperated breath and collapsed back onto the sofa. “Amelie extends far too much leniency to her staff. Just look at these imperious servants who fancy themselves superior to their visitors! In my household, such behavior would warrant immediate dismissal!”

Corrine lowered her gaze, a cool, knowing smile playing across her lips. “Without the employer’s implicit direction, where would servants acquire such audacity?”

The implication hung in the air between them—their frigid reception almost certainly originated from Amelie herself.

Hearing this, Karina’s expression froze.

After a moment of contemplation, she leaned toward Corrine, her voice dropping to a bewildered whisper. “I cannot fathom her game. She extends an invitation only to abandon us here like unwanted parcels. What possible purpose could this serve?”

Surely it was not just to inconvenience them?

Corrine cast a significant glance in her direction. “Patience. Let’s see how this unfolds.”

Since they were clearly being subjected to a deliberate slight, the underlying motives would eventually surface.

Time crept forward with agonizing deliberation. After another forty minutes, with Karina’s throat parched and her patience hanging by a thread, Corrine placed a restraining hand on her arm. “We’ll grant her ten more minutes. If she continues this absence, we shall leave the gift and depart with our dignity intact.”

Witnessing Corrine’s unruffled poise helped temper the flames of Karina’s mounting indignation.

The final ten minutes evaporated in what felt like mere seconds.
