Chapter 1325:

The lights flashed, the engine roared, and within moments the car was swallowed by the darkness of the night.

Carlos’s mother snapped back to herself, her voice rising again into the night air. “Did you all see that? He threatened me right in front of the police! I’m hiring the best lawyer there is—I’ll sue him for everything he has!”

Melany pressed her lips together, walked to Deandre’s car, and got inside. She looked at the bodyguard in the driver’s seat and said quietly, “Take me to the station.”

The bodyguard, clearly experienced in managing situations like this, glanced back with a reassuring expression. “Don’t worry, ma’am. Mr. Owen will be fine. The chief owes him a favor—they’ve worked together before.”

Melany’s frown deepened. “Working together to do illegal things?”

“Not at all—Mr. Owen is done with that life,” the bodyguard said quickly. “Either way, there’s really nothing to worry about.”

Melany turned her gaze to the window, her voice quiet and distant. “I’m not worried about him. I just don’t want to end up owing him anything.”

While on her way, Melany quickly called her lawyer and urged him to get to the station as soon as possible.

By the time she arrived, Deandre had already been escorted into an interrogation room. The officer at the front desk stopped her immediately. “Ma’am, you’re not permitted to go in there.”

“I’m directly involved in this,” Melany said, her voice hoarse but firm. “The injured man tried to violate me. My friend stepped in to protect me.”

“Ma’am,” the officer replied calmly, maintaining a professional tone, “we understand your situation. The injured party is currently at the hospital, and once the medical assessment is complete, a formal case may be filed. However, what your friend did is considered a separate legal matter—the two can’t be combined.”

Melany drew a slow, steady breath and tried to collect her thoughts.

She knew that if she chose to stay out of it, Deandre’s people would quietly handle everything behind the scenes. Sooner or later, the right person would be reached, the entire incident would be erased as though it had never happened, and Deandre would walk out a back door, leaving no trace behind.

But Melany no longer wanted him controlling how things unfolded. She didn’t want to owe him anything—nothing that might give him a reason to step back into her life.

At the very least, handling it this way might help her put some distance between them again.

“I’ve already contacted my lawyer,” she said, her voice steady. “He’ll be here shortly. I’d like to see Deandre before he arrives.”

The officer studied her for a long moment. “Your lawyer is welcome to come,” he replied evenly, “but until then, you’re not permitted to see the person in custody. Those are the rules.”

Melany bit her lip, then finally relented and took a seat to wait.

The lawyer arrived sooner than she had expected.
