Chapter 280:
Rylie had long expected Brad to ask for her help. Jaxon’s machines did have research value. As soon as the sun rose, she hopped on her motorcycle and headed to the base.
Today’s check-up was the last step before a major operation involving oil fields. The goal was to ensure the soldiers were fit and ready, with no health problems during critical moments. It was also part of their routine evaluations.
Brad technically didn’t need to be part of it. Though his rank and authority were untouched, he’d been recovering at home for nearly a year, handling duties through video calls.
Lately, as his health improved, he had become more active at the base. And with the upcoming operation under his command, many eyes were on him. His deputy had already complained to the Navy Commander-in-Chief about Brad being exempt from the check-up. The Army Commander-in-Chief voiced similar concerns.
Sean, Brad’s grandfather and a retired military hero, heard about the pressure on his grandson and called the military district himself. But his prime had passed. Though he was still respected, the growing rumors of Brad’s poor health meant his words no longer held the same weight.
Some wanted Brad gone. Others saw him as a roadblock. They were all waiting for him to break down. But Brad’s strength frustrated them. That’s when they joined forces against him.
Jaxon, always second in command, saw this as his golden chance. He wanted to use Brad’s health to push him out.
“I understand your concerns about Brad’s health,” the Navy Commander-in-Chief said, frowning at Jaxon. “But no one else is ready to take over. Let’s complete the operation first — then we can talk about everything else.”
Jaxon felt a sting but stayed composed. “I’m not trying to strip him of command. I’m only suggesting a medical evaluation. As long as he passes the check-up and proves he can lead, I have no objections. I’ll fully support him.”
The Army Commander-in-Chief paused before adding, “We all know Brad’s health isn’t ideal. It’s likely he won’t pass the full evaluation. But we just need a report from the machine to say he’s stable enough until the operation ends. A simple diagnosis should be enough.”

The Navy Commander-in-Chief hesitated.
Just then, Sean’s call came through. It was put on speaker in the meeting room. His voice echoed with authority. “I know my grandson’s health better than any of you! The fact that he’s still standing and leading proves everything!” The officers exchanged glances.
Jaxon’s lips twitched. He cleared his throat. “Mr. Morgan, we all respect you, but the ship’s medical systems have been updated. Isn’t it a good chance to properly examine Brad’s—”
“Don’t be ridiculous! I know how unreliable that machine is! You want to judge my grandson’s health?” Sean snapped.
The Army Commander-in-Chief looked at the Navy Commander-in-Chief, who simply shrugged.
The Morgan family’s influence wasn’t what it used to be, but no one wanted to face the fury from Sean.
The Navy Commander-in-Chief finally relented. “We’ll keep it simple. Just basic tests. Nothing more.”
