Chapter 385:

“You’re lying! She’s not my mother!” Zaylee shouted back, her anger flaring as she whipped around to glare threateningly at Perla. “Tell them! Are you my mother?”

Perla’s lips trembled, her sadness clear, yet she forced herself to shake her head for Zaylee’s sake. “No… this classmate must be mistaken.”

“What?” Melany stared in disbelief, unable to understand why a mother would endure such humiliation for her child. She bit down on her lip, realizing too late that her attempt to help had only turned into a spectacle.

Now, all eyes shifted to her. “Why are you even here at Zaylee’s birthday party? Didn’t you say you weren’t coming?”

“Melany just wanted to see the grand birthday party, obviously. Why else would someone like her show up? She definitely has never celebrated her birthday like this,” another classmate sneered.

“I’m not here for that!” Melany shot back, anger flaring in her voice. “I have zero interest in attending such a shallow, pretentious party.”

“What are you doing here, then?” the girls sneered at Melany, their voices laced with mockery.

Zaylee stepped in quickly, trying to smooth things over. “Alright, that’s enough. We’re all classmates. Melany, I’m really happy you came to my birthday party. We’re still friends, aren’t we?”

“You don’t deserve to be my friend,” Melany said firmly, her tone cutting through the tense air. “And I already told you, I’m not here for you.” Without another glance, she moved past the group and strode forward.

A mocking laugh came from behind her. “Wow, does she actually think she can go to the private room upstairs?”

But before anyone could say more, two security guards stepped aside at the staircase, unlocking the door to the top floor and letting Melany through without hesitation.

Zaylee’s smile faltered, her eyes widening as she watched Melany’s figure vanish up the stairs. Her hands curled into tight fists, nails biting into her palms. The low murmurs of her classmates around her felt like sharp needles pressing into her ears, each whisper stinging worse than the last.

“Oh my gosh, she’s really going to the private room on the top floor?”

“I thought only high-profile guests were allowed up there. My dad tried to book it once and couldn’t even get a reservation…”

“Who could Melany possibly be meeting?”

“I heard someone mention seeing several military vehicles outside earlier. Could Brad be upstairs?”

“Wouldn’t Zaylee know if that were true? Aren’t they supposed to be secretly dating? They can’t actually be that distant, can they?”

“Maybe it’s just some other officers having a gathering. Stop overthinking it. Melany probably knows a few influential business owners here,” Zaylee said sharply, her voice carrying over the crowd as her pink dress swirled with her sudden turn.
